Ego death or ego integration?
The word ego, coming from Latin, is first defined in the dictionary as:
the “I” or self of any person; a person as thinking, feeling, and willing, and distinguishing itself from the selves of others and from objects of its thought.
It is that which sets us apart from everyone and everything else, our uniqueness.
When I see or hear the term “ego death”, I can’t help but cringe a little bit. For those who are new to the process, it can feel quite scary and daunting to encounter. The process of peeling back the layers, to go find your true self, is already painful and confronting enough without the feeling that you are losing your identity. That is what it can feel like if you have absolutely no clue what is to be left behind after the peeling away of all the layers.
To me it always sounds like there is a loss, something that disappears, and I don’t fully agree with that concept.
To be clear, I do very much believe that you no longer identify with, or hold on to, something that you thought was part of your identity, but that doesn’t mean that you lose that perspective. In fact I think you have gained a part of your true identity in the process.
There is a Dutch book with the title ‘’Ik en mijn ikken’’, translated meaning ‘’Me and my me’s’’. It invites you to look at yourself in a different way. The ego is made up of many sub-ego’s that represent different moments in our life; like what kind of partner am I, father/mother, son/daughter, friend, etc… not only that but also that there is a sub-ego formed when you have an event in your life that is very impactful for you, be it traumatic or ecstatic, physical, emotional, spiritual. All of these sub-ego’s connected and intertwined with one another whether your aware/awake to it or not. When you are becoming aware of it there is Higher Self and spiritual ego that come in to play more and more, so adding to the whole jumble of me’s residing in your heads.
By doing the shadow work and integrating the insights into the wholeness that is us we are always gaining something and expanding our own consciousness, we don’t lose a part of who we are. When we no longer identify with one of our sub-ego’s, victim me, abused me, angry me, insecure me, we don’t lose the sub-ego but rather heal from it and integrate it into the magical wholeness that is you.
Authenticity is key. Stay true to you, the whole you and nothing but you.
Namaste to all you beautiful souls out there.
