Van toevluchtsoord tot verdeeld land: hoe tolerant is Nederland nog?

Nederland staat internationaal bekend als een tolerant land. Niet alleen vanwege onze huidige reputatie, maar vooral door onze geschiedenis.
In de 17e eeuw was de Republiek der Nederlanden een toevluchtsoord voor mensen die vanwege hun geloof of ideeën werden vervolgd. Verschillende religies werden er — binnen bepaalde grenzen — toegestaan. Voor buitenlandse bezoekers was dat destijds een uitzonderlijke en soms zelfs verbazingwekkende situatie.

Maar wat betekent tolerantie vandaag de dag? Nu religie een minder centrale rol speelt, gaat het debat steeds vaker over andere overtuigingen, identiteiten en maatschappelijke verschillen. Hoe tolerant zijn we werkelijk wanneer standpunten botsen?

In aflevering 7 van de wetenschapspodcast ‘Oh Ja Joh?!’ gaat hoogleraar en filosoof Wiep van Bunge in op de geschiedenis én de actuele betekenis van tolerantie in Nederland.

Hoogleraar filosofie Ronald van Raak reageert in de Volkskrant op het havo-eindexamen filosofie, waarin klimaatverandering, verantwoordelijkheid en mensbeeld centraal stonden.

Volgens Van Raak werden leerlingen “echt uitgedaagd zelf te filosoferen”. Ook noemt hij de combinatie van klassieke filosofen en hedendaagse denkers zoals Jane Goodall waardevol.

“Het klimaat is een actueel onderwerp, maar door Goodall aan te halen wordt het geen doemverhaal. Eerder een zoektocht naar hoop en verantwoordelijkheid.”

Gijs van Oenen was tot zijn pensioen in februari dit jaar universitair hoofddocent aan de Erasmus School of Philosophy, waar hij zich bezighield met politieke en sociale filosofie. Zijn werk zoekt vaak bewust de grenzen van het academische op: columns, toneelstukken, essays in kunsttijdschriften en boeken die de dialectiek met de samenleving aangaan.

In dit gesprek blikt hij terug op zijn carrière, de intellectuele verschuivingen sinds de jaren zeventig, de opkomst van identiteitspolitiek, de druk van vrijheid en de rol van filosofie in een tijd zonder duidelijke historische richting.

De heropening van het Spinozahuis in Rijnsburg brengt een van de belangrijkste denkers uit de Nederlandse geschiedenis opnieuw onder de aandacht van een breed publiek. In dit huis werkte Baruch Spinoza tussen 1661 en 1663 aan zijn Ethica, een werk dat nog altijd invloed heeft op hoe we denken over vrijheid, kennis en samenleving.

Voor de Erasmus School of Philosophy is deze heropening extra bijzonder. Prof. dr. Han van Ruler, hoogleraar intellectuele geschiedenis aan de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam, is als bestuursvoorzitter van Vereniging Het Spinozahuis nauw betrokken bij het museum. Zijn betrokkenheid bij de heropening, die werd verricht in aanwezigheid van Koning Willem-Alexander, onderstreept hoe Spinoza’s ideeën opnieuw zichtbaar worden als bron van reflectie op actuele vragen rond vrijheid, democratische cultuur en samenleven.

Het vernieuwde museum laat zien dat Spinoza niet alleen een historische figuur is, maar ook een denker die vragen stelt die nog altijd herkenbaar zijn. Zoals Van Ruler in een recent interview benadrukte, kan Spinoza’s filosofie helpen om hedendaagse spanningen beter te duiden en kritisch na te denken over de verhouding tussen individu en samenleving.

Universitair docent politieke filosofie Jamie van der Klaauw was vorige week te gast bij het radioprogramma De Nacht is ZWART van Omroep ZWART. In de uitzending sprak hij over de morele vragen rondom ethisch consumeren en de grenzen van individuele verantwoordelijkheid.

Van der Klaauw werd uitgenodigd naar aanleiding van een artikel waarin hij de vraag stelt of ethisch consumeren daadwerkelijk een effectieve morele praktijk is, of dat het eerder een elitair ideaal blijft. In het publieke debat klinkt steeds vaker de oproep om bewuster te kopen, producten te boycotten of uitsluitend ‘ethische’ keuzes te maken. Maar wat betekent dat precies, en is het voor consumenten wel mogelijk om volledig ethisch te handelen?

Tijdens het gesprek ging Van der Klaauw in op de spanningen die hierbij ontstaan. Zo besprak hij de paradox dat mensen proberen zoveel mogelijk goed te doen met hun consumptiekeuzes, terwijl de economische en maatschappelijke systemen waarin we leven deze keuzes tegelijkertijd sterk beperken.

Het volledige gesprek laat zien hoe complex de relatie is tussen individuele verantwoordelijkheid en structurele verandering – en waarom het debat over ethisch consumeren relevanter is dan ooit.

Wat kunnen we vandaag nog leren van tien eeuwen Nederlandse denkers?

Onze collega Ronald van Raak gaat hierover in gesprek tijdens de komende editie van Studio Erasmus, de talkshow van de Erasmus Universiteit over wetenschap en actualiteit.

In zijn nieuwe boek Geen land van grote woorden duikt Van Raak in een lange traditie van denkers uit Nederland. Van Erasmus en Spinoza tot minder bekende figuren als Hadewijch en Thomas a Kempis: welke ideeën kregen een plek in onze geschiedenis – en welke juist niet? En wat zegt dat over hoe Nederland naar zichzelf kijkt?

Tijdens Studio Erasmus, georganiseerd door Studium Generale, komen wetenschap en actualiteit samen in een avond met interviews, minicolleges en livemuziek. Naast Van Raak verzorgt Paraskevas Petrou een minicollege over leisure crafting: waarom het doelgericht vormgeven van je hobby’s niet alleen je vrije tijd, maar ook je werk kan verrijken.

We recently bid farewell to Gijs van Oenen at the Erasmus School of Philosophy. On 12 February, he delivered his farewell lecture, “Adventures of Dialectics,” marking the close of a remarkable academic journey that began in 1994.

In his lecture, Van Oenen wove together personal reflections and decades of philosophical research, with dialectics as the guiding thread. He described dialectics as a “grasp of knowledge” that is as necessary as it is impossible — where what truly matters often emerges in the negative, the unforeseen, or the unresolved.

He revisited his influential work on themes such as:

• Tolerance policies

• Interpassivity

• “Overstrained democracy”

Drawing on sources ranging from a reinterpretation of the Odyssey to the philosophical and musical motivations of Theodor Adorno and the Frankfurt School, Van Oenen emphasized that dialectics is not merely an abstract theory. It is also a form of self-examination — one in which the philosopher, as a person, is inevitably implicated.

He concluded with a plea for an inclusive dialectics that bridges the personal and the political through theatrical and aesthetic means.

A fitting farewell to a scholar who continuously challenged us to think critically — and self-critically.

The NWO (Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek) has awarded Professor Yuk Hui a prestigious Vici grant of €1.5 million.

His project, “Technodiversity: A New Lens on AI,” will develop a new philosophical and political framework to address the planetary challenges of artificial intelligence.

The research moves beyond “one-size-fits-all” technological narratives by advancing the concept of technodiversity — emphasizing plurality, cultural perspectives, and alternative technological futures.

As AI continues to reshape the human condition, this project revisits the philosophical and epistemological history of AI, critically examines the political economy of automation, and explores how diverse technological imaginaries can contribute to more inclusive and locally grounded innovation.

Yuk Hui: “I am absolutely delighted and deeply honoured to receive this Vici grant from the Dutch Research Council. It is a tremendous vote of confidence in my work. This funding provides the time and resources to deepen a philosophical investigation into the history and future of artificial intelligence. Crucially, it will allow me to further develop the concept of ‘technodiversity’.

I am incredibly excited to get started, to build a dedicated research team and programme, and to consolidate collaborations within the newly founded Erasmus Institute for Philosophy and Technology.”

The grant also provides a significant impulse to the Institute for Philosophy and Technology at Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam, strengthening interdisciplinary research at the intersection of philosophy, computation, and automation.
