This week's episode of our podcast features Danielle Hirsch, director at Both ENDS / Both ENDS. This Netherlands-based environmental and organization is devoted to funding, knowledge-sharing and policy work within a large global network.

Our conversation revolves around questions like: Do we organize processes to share power? Are enough ‘powerless’ voices included to ensure suffering stops? And why does the Netherlands have such a specific ‘do-gooder’ self-image on the global stage? It was a joy to speak to Daniëlle 🎙

🚲 Beyond flying cars… 🚲

In maart nam Eva drie dagen deel aan de masterclass ‘co-imagining urban mobility futures’ van Humankindcity .

Drie dagen lang werkten we aan het verbeelden van een stad zonder auto’s. Door middel van speculatieve ontwerpmethoden gingen we met een divers team uit verschillende landen aan de slag. Hoe zou dit eruit kunnen zien? Niet zozeer om de toekomst te ontwerpen, maar om na te denken over welke scenario’s er mogelijk zijn.

Het programma werd afgewisseld met super toffe sprekers, zoals George Liu van het Urban Cycling Institute en Derk Loorbach van DRIFT for transition

🚲 Het vandaag de nationale ‘fiets naar je werkdag’ is? Fiets jij vandaag naar je werk?

🏗️ In een transitie heb je niet alleen mensen nodig die aan nieuwe visies bouwen, maar ook mensen die huidige systemen afbreken.

🔮 Er is niet één toekomst mogelijk. Juist door verschillende scenario’s te bedenken, help je jezelf om een visie te vormen over de toekomstige waarde van je organisatie, product of bedrijf.

🚗 Singapore een voorbeeld is waar er maar een maximaal aantal auto’s mag zijn, in de stadstaat? Als er een hogere vraag is, wordt autobezit dus ook duurder.

Kan jouw social enterprise of duurzame start-up wel wat hulp gebruiken? De studenten van onze minor gaan graag aan de slag met jouw uitdagingen rondom duurzaamheid en rechtvaardigheid. Inschrijving sluit 20 juni!

Van september tot oktober 2023 hebben we weer plekken vrij voor partners in de minor ‘New Economic Thinking & Social Entrepreneurship’ van DRIFT, Impact Centre Erasmus (ICE) en Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Jij brengt een uitdaging in op het vlak van sociaal of groen ondernemen, en een vaste groep minor-studenten gaat vervolgens voor jouw organisatie aan de slag. Zo kunnen de studenten werken met de meest relevante en actuele lesstof die er is, en bieden we jou kennis, advies en een netwerk van gelijkgestemde ondernemers.

"Ik was onder de indruk van hoe de studenten zich in zo'n korte tijd hadden verdiept in mijn bedrijf en onderwerp. Ik kreeg zeer waardevol advies in het projectrapport dat ik in de prakijk kan gaan gebruiken!" zei een eerdere deelnemer.

De energietransitie is in een aantal jaren uitgegroeid van een niche vraagstuk tot *het* dossier op ontelbare vergader- en tekentafels. Geen transitie is in Nederland zo vergevorderd als die van hernieuwbare energie.

Deze nieuwe fase confronteert transitiemakers met obstakels en kansen waar we jaren geleden alleen nog maar van konden dromen – of van wakker lagen: netcongestie, arbeidstekort en grote toename aan wetten en beleid.

De denkwijzen en skills die nodig waren om de energietransitie tot hier te brengen zijn dan ook niet voldoende voor de opgave die nu voor ons ligt.

Daarom biedt DRIFT ‘Versnelling van de Energietransitie’ aan – een zesdaagse opleiding op locatie die je klaarstoomt voor de volgende fase. Samen met een hechte groep van maximaal 24 ervaren transitiemakers vanuit allerlei verschillende sectoren en domeinen. Inschrijven kan nu!

Deze opleiding biedt tools, theorie en reflectie om fundamentele verandering te versnellen in deze kritieke fase voor ons energiesysteem

With wind energy being so crucial to realising Europe’s ambitions, there is a lot to talk about.

Delivering on the EU renewable energy targets requires installing more and larger on- and offshore wind energy technologies and speeding up planning and deployment processes whilst considering and balancing diverse social, environmental, technological and economic effects.

Thus, accelerating wind energy deployment in a sustainable and just manner must encompass structures and processes in decision-making and in citizen participation.

How do we get from A to B in a way that's fair for you and me? Sign up for this online event 7 December to hear from and discuss with other makers and thinkers working on and issues!

Why is it relevant to examine mobility transitions from a justice perspective? And what can we gain from looking at Just Sustainability Transitions through the frame of mobility justice?

Taking part in our panel will be Dr. Anna Nikolaeva (University of Amsterdam), who will have us looking into how mobility justice can be translated across borders; Emil Beemer and Sophie Buchel from DRIFT will then take us through the transition perspective presenting action-oriented research on mobility justice; and finally Stephanie Johnstone-Laurette will take the stage to speak about the Ecology Action Centre’s (Nova Scotia, Canada) experience with urban mobility justice in relation to Active Transportation.

Transition by design? It's about time! 50 years after the Club of Rome , the 10th edition of the Architecture Biennale Rotterdam is taking stock. Opens 22 September.

DRIFT will send Derk Loorbach as one of the curators, co-create a parallel program and develop ateliers 🎨

The 2022 Architecture Biennale Rotterdam paints a picture that is both worrisome and hopeful. The exhibition features the work of architects, urban designers, artists, academics and landscape designers that documents and maps the causes and consequences of climate change.

DRIFT is also involved in developing ‘transition ateliers’ that give room for ACCELERATOR, ACTIVIST and ANCESTOR projects and concepts. After an open call in May, we have selected a number of local transition initiatives across the Netherlands. The first ateliers have started in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Tilburg, and more will follow, focusing on neighborhoods, deltas and ports.

A new exhibition on the role of time in transitions starts 22 September. We are involved as curator and by organising transition ateliers.

In September the minor ‘New Economic Thinking & Social Entrepreneurship’ by DRIFT and the Impact Centre Erasmus (ICE) is starting again. And we’ll have a course full of BSc students that are keen to help solve your challenges around climate change, impact strategy or inclusion.

We are looking for transformative and start-ups that would like to involve students in solving their challenges. The students will support you by doing research and will deliver a pitch and a report on your impact challenge.
