Can you guess why "보다" includes meanings of “to watch, to look, to see”?

보다 : To look, To watch, To see 👀

In Korean, 보다 can mean "to see, to look, or to watch" as we consider these all action similar to each other.
Interestingly, the passive form of "보다," which is "보이다," can also be translated as "to see." This is because "보이다" implies that something happens to be seen without my(or subject's) intention—essentially, "to be seen." Therefore, while "보이다" literally means "to be seen," it is often understood as "to see" in the context of unintended perception.

Same rule applies to "듣다," which means 'to listen', 'to hear.' Its passive form "들리다," can also be translated as "to hear," as it describes sound (or noise) that happens to be heard without intention.

However, "냄새를 맡다," meaning "to smell," does not have a passive form - similar to English - where there is no other words for 'happen to smell without intention'. Isn't it fun? :)

The Answer: 어린이날, 어린이일(ㅇ)

날 is native Korean words of ‘day’ and typically combined with other native Korean words.
Ex) 어린이날, 어버이날
* 어린이: kid(s), children
* 어버이: parents

일 is Sino-Korean words of ‘date’ or ‘last letter of day’ and typically combined with other native Sino Korean words
Ex) 현충일, 생일, 결혼기념일

Then how to recognize Sino-words and Native-words?
Unfortunately, there is no clear rule to find Sino/Native, but memorizing each of them.
