📢 UNIC is delighted to announce the winners of our UNIC Best CityLab Award, presented at the 2026 UNIC Thematic Conference hosted at Koç University in Istanbul.

The UNIC Best CityLab Award 2026 was given to CityLab project “Cultural Diversity, Integration and Anti-Racism” and to researchers Professor Dr. Sandra Aßmann, Dr. Catharina Keßler, and Dr. Daniel Schumann form Ruhr University Bochum, Germany.

The UNIC CityLab was selected for its outstanding transdisciplinary and co-creative approach to addressing racism, discrimination, and inclusion within institutional and urban contexts. Bringing together university actors, municipal departments, civil society organisations, students, and private-sector experts, the initiative successfully embedded participation and research collaboration throughout the entire process rather than treating them as isolated activities. The CityLab demonstrated strong relevance to urban transformation by connecting issues of anti-racism, multilingualism, and welcoming culture with broader questions of democratic participation, social inclusion, and sustainable urban development in the City of Bochum.

Congratulations to the winners! 🏆🎉

📢 UNIC is delighted to announce the winners of our UNIC Best Paper Awards, presented at the 2026 UNIC Thematic Conference hosted at Koç University in Istanbul.

This time the UNIC Best Paper Award was given to two researchers. One of the winners is Associated Professor Dr. Linda Palla from Malmö University, Sweden. Her research publication titled “The need for speed: identification of ‘the deviant’ as the ultimate goal for high returns in early childhood education and care” makes a substantial theoretical contribution by linking early childhood education and care (ECEC) policies to broader questions of power, governance, and social justice.

The second award was given to Dr. Monika Kazmierczak from University of Łódź, Poland. Tittle of the awarded publication is "A Proposal for a Non-Antagonistic Approach to Disorder and Order in Cluttering” and it demonstrates exceptional innovation by applying Chaos Theory and the concept of "chaosmos" to human communication, effectively breaking away from binary, antagonistic views of "order vs. disorder."

Congratulations to the winners! 🎉🏆

📣 LAST 8 DAYS! Call for Papers and Proposals | The 2026 UNIC Thematic Conference
❗ CfP Deadline is 1 December 2025.

📆 Conference Dates: 17-19 June 2026 at Koç University Istanbul

🌆 This conference examines how institutions strive to respond to the challenges of growing socio-spatial inequalities, uneven access to health and social care, and the pressures of governing increasingly diverse and superdiverse urban populations, including how everyday encounters with institutions in clinics, schools, welfare offices, neighborhood councils, streets, platforms, and housing systems shape well-being and belonging.

📛 Building on UNIC’s Thematic Lines 4 (Justice, Security, and Institutions) and 6 (Health and Well-being), the conference is organized around two key thematic streams—focusing on justice, security, and institutional dynamics, and on health and well-being in post-industrial urban settings—with Superdiversity serving as a transversal theme that highlights questions of inclusion and belonging in post-industrial cities.

✍️ We invite multidisciplinary contributions from across, but not limited to, the social sciences, law, health, education, and urban studies. The conference is now accepting proposals for individual paper presentations and full thematic panels, but also workshops, roundtables, and book presentations.
