Do you want to dive into the world of Chawan-making and Japanese tea culture? Discover the traditional Japanese Raku style as you learn hand-forming pottery techniques at our workshop in The Netherlands!

At our workshop, we embrace the intimate connection between hand and clay. You'll immerse yourself in the centuries-old tradition of Raku pottery, shaping each Chawan with precision and care.

But the experience goes beyond pottery-making. You will also have the opportunity to partake in a traditional Japanese tea ceremony.

Join us in Reeuwijk for an unforgettable journey where tradition, craftsmanship, and mindfulness converge. Whether you're a seasoned artisan or a curious enthusiast, our workshop promises to inspire and enrich your understanding of Chawan-making and Japanese tea culture.

Maximum amount of participants is three
Duration of the workshop: 1 day (about 6 hours)
When the workshop will take place will be determined by mutual agreement.
The following work to be carried out after the workshop is included in the price:
Red Chawan
After the bowl has dried, it will be fired in an electric kiln. Before the final firing a transparent Japanese glaze is applied to the bowl with a brush.
Black Chawan
After the bowl has dried, it will be fired in an electric kiln. Before the final firing a black Japanese glaze is applied to the bowl with a brush.
Red Chawan with burn marks
After the bowl has dried, it will be fired in an electric kiln. To create burn marks, the bowl will be extra fired in a charcoal kiln. Before the final firing a transparent Japanese glaze is applied to the bowl with a brush.

The workshop starts with making Nerikiri. Nerikiri is made from butter bean paste, sugar, rice flour and water. When the Nerikiri is ready it can be coloured. Inside the Wagashi we will put Koshian. This is made from red Azuki beans paste and sugar.

In the afternoon we mold sweat bean paste into art and enjoy the flavor during a Japanse tea ceremony afterwards. Suitable for all ages.

In a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, a delicate bamboo spoon is used. During this workshop you learn to craft your own Chashaku out of beautiful Japanese bamboo! During the three days, the participants will form two Chawan. These Chawan will be made in the traditional Japanese Raku style. This means that the Chawan are made by hand, the Japanese Raku glaze will be added to the Chawan by brush. The workshop starts with a Japanese tea ceremony during which the participants can see how a Chawan is used.
Day 1: Japanese tea ceremony, information about Chawan and clay, start forming the two Chawan.
Day 2: finish forming the two Chawan and glaze a Chawan made by Hans Pillen.
Day 3: Japanese tea ceremony. The participants receive their Usucha tea in the Chawan that they have glazed themselves. They also take this Chawan home.
Duration: about 5 hours/day
Location: Reeuwijk – free parking is available
