Have you noticed that nature is showing more and more autumn colors? I found this beautiful leaf during my walk yesterday. A walk is a nice activity to do during your break. After that, your concentration is a lot better, and learning goes more smoothly. Have you already found beautiful autumn treasures?

Is het jullie al opgevallen dat de natuur steeds meer herfstkleuren laat zien? Dit prachtige blad vond ik gisteren tijdens mijn wandeling. Een wandeling is een fijne activiteit om in je pauze te doen. Daarna is je concentratie weer een stuk beter, waardoor leren soepeler gaat. Heb jij al mooie herfstschatten gevonden?

Almost 3rd of October! Did you know that during "Leidens Ontzet", the inhabitants of Leiden traditionally eat herring and white bread? This tradition refers to the end of the Spanish siege of the city on October 3rd 1574. The starving citizens were liberated by the "Watergeuzen", who distributed the bread and fish. Another tradition is the "Hutspot". The tale of "Leidens Ontzet" tells that in order to conquer Leiden, the dikes were breached by the "Watergeuzen". Fearing the rising waters and an imminent attack, the Spaniards fled from the Lammenschans. A pot of stew with potatoes, onion and carrots (as depicted in the image) was found there shortly after their departure. That's why "Hutspot", is a meal that belongs to the tradition of October 3rd.

Bijna 3 oktober! Wist je dat tijdens Leidens Ontzet de inwoners van Leiden traditioneel haring en wittebrood eten? Deze traditie verwijst naar het einde van de Spaanse belegering van de stad op 3 oktober 1574. De uitgehongerde burgers werden bevrijd door de Watergeuzen, die het brood en de haring uitdeelden. Een andere traditie is de Hutspot. Het verhaal van Leidens Ontzet vertelt dat om Leiden te veroveren de dijken werden doorbroken door de Watergeuzen. Uit angst voor het stijgende water en een dreigende aanval sloegen de Spanjaarden op de Lammenschans op de vlucht. Daar werd kort na hun vertrek een pot stamppot gevonden met aardappelen, uien en wortelen (zoals afgebeeld op de afbeelding). Daarom is Hutspot, een maaltijd die hoort bij de traditie van 3 oktober.
