And now, without further ado, we are moving on to our next project and hereby announcing that on the 7nd and 8th of July the Understudies will be performing the 1899 play "Sherlock Holmes"!
"A new and exciting case for Sherlock Holmes! Alice Faulkner had a sister who became secretly engaged to a man of wealth and stature. After he left her, destitute and pregnant, she died in childbirth. Alice, heartbroken, kept the lover’s letters in order to get revenge on the man that killed her sister. But there are other forces at work, parties that want to use Alice’s letters for their own ends. Will Holmes be able to bring this case to a satisfactory end?"
This play was written by William Gillette, a famous Victorian actor who portrayed Sherlock Holmes on stage more than 500 times, as a reworking of a flopped Arthur Conan Doyle play. It was one of the most popular plays of its year, being staged 260 times in New York before going on tour throughout the U.S. It was later staged a further 200 times in London, where a young Charlie Chaplin performed in one of the smaller roles :)
