‘Impact maken betekent voor mij: samen werken aan een betere samenleving. Dat is precies waarom ik elke dag met zoveel energie mijn werk doe. Als universitair hoofddocent Strategie verbind ik wetenschap met de praktijk. Ik werk samen met bedrijven, overheden, onderzoekers en studenten aan oplossingen voor grote maatschappelijke uitdagingen zoals duurzaamheid, circulariteit en klimaatverandering. Juist dankzij die samenwerking ontstaat vooruitgang.
Een project waar ik enorm trots op ben, is onze samenwerking met afvalverwerker ARN in Weurt. Samen hebben we bereikt dat we wereldwijd de enigen zijn die luiers kunnen recyclen. De kosten voor de productie van luiers liggen hoog, waardoor recycling niet alleen duurzaam is, maar ook een echte oplossing biedt. Wat begon als een maatschappelijk probleem, groeide uit tot een innovatie die laat zien wat mogelijk wordt als wetenschap en praktijk elkaar versterken.
Wat mijn werk zo bijzonder maakt, is dat geen enkel maatschappelijk vraagstuk vanuit één discipline opgelost kan worden. We brengen kennis uit bijvoorbeeld bedrijfskunde, psychologie, scheikunde, geologie en planologie samen. Juist door mensen en ideeën te verbinden, ontstaan oplossingen die organisaties én de samenleving verder helpen. Ook in de regio Arnhem-Nijmegen zie ik hoeveel potentie er is. Binnen initiatieven zoals het Lifeport Resource Institute werken we aan grondstofzekerheid en regionale samenwerking. Daar merk ik telkens weer hoeveel kracht er vrijkomt wanneer mensen elkaar weten te vinden bij een gezamenlijk doel.
Maar uiteindelijk haal ik misschien wel de meeste energie uit het contact met studenten. Het mooiste moment is wanneer ik zie dat studenten inzichten uit onderzoek meenemen in hun toekomstige praktijk en daar zelf impact mee maken. Dan weet ik dat wat we vandaag doen, morgen doorwerkt in de samenleving. Voor mij is dat waar de Radboud-strategie “Connected for Impact” om draait: kennis verbinden, samenwerken en zo bijdragen aan oplossingen die er echt toe doen.’

‘Making an impact means working together for a better society. That is exactly why I bring so much energy to my work every day. As Associate Professor of Strategy, I connect science and practice. I work with businesses, government, researchers and students on solutions to major societal challenges such as sustainability, circularity and climate change. It is through that collaboration that progress is made.
A project I am especially proud of is our partnership with waste processor ARN in Weurt. Together, we achieved something unique: we are the only ones in the world able to recycle nappies. The cost of producing nappies is high, so recycling is not only sustainable but also a practical solution. What began as a social problem grew into an innovation that shows what becomes possible when science and practice reinforce one another.
What makes my work so special is that no societal challenge can be solved from a single discipline. We bring together knowledge from fields such as business administration, psychology, chemistry, geology and spatial planning. By connecting people and ideas, we create solutions that help both organisations and society move forward. In the Arnhem–Nijmegen region too, I see great potential. Through initiatives such as the Lifeport Resource Institute, we work on resource security and regional collaboration. Time and again, I see how much strength is released when people unite around a shared goal.
Yet in the end, I may get the most energy from working with students. The best moment is seeing students take insights from research into their future practice and create impact themselves. Then I know that what we do today will shape society tomorrow. For me, that is what the Radboud strategy “Connected for Impact” is all about: connecting knowledge, working together and contributing to solutions that truly matter.’
