Starting university is about much more than finding your classroom. It is about finding your people, discovering your new home and beginning to feel that you belong.

Welcome to Introweek 2026 — Part 1 at University College Roosevelt.

For our new Class of 2029, Orientation Week began with students being introduced to their Introweek families. This year’s theme was music, with 12 families inspired by different bands, artists and musical films. Throughout the week, they completed challenges and collected stamps in a friendly competition to become the Best Introweek Family.

During the Middelburg Tour, students explored the city while getting to know some of the people, organisations and places that form part of student life here. They were introduced to UCR’s rowing society O.D.I.N., created festival outfits at Kilo Sale Zeeland, took on a creative family-photo challenge at De Drvkkery, stopped for ice cream at FRESCO and visited De Klepperhoeve to spend some time with the animals.

On Monday, the Beach Walk took them from Middelburg towards Dishoek, with several stops along the way. Students met members of A.L. Fides, competed against O.M.D. Erodios in a flip-cup challenge, took a short trampoline break and eventually arrived at the beach for swimming, rugby, water fights and some well-earned time together.

Behind all of the games and challenges is an important purpose.

Introweek helps new students become familiar with University College Roosevelt, Middelburg and the wider community around them. It gives them opportunities to meet current students, build friendships and begin feeling at home before their studies fully begin.

And this was only part of their Orientation Week.

Students also explored the UCR buildings, met their tutors, learned more about well-being and student support at UCR, discovered the library, joined pub crawls and quizzes, and celebrated together at the final Introweek party.

At the beginning of the week, there were 12 families competing for stamps.

By the end, there was one new UCR community. 💙

A good CV is not about trying to sound impressive.

It is about making it easy for someone to quickly understand who you are, what you can do, and why they should remember you.

A lot of students underestimate how much small changes can improve a CV. Clear structure, specific examples, and showing impact make a huge difference.

And no, you do not need years of experience to have a strong CV. Projects, student societies, volunteering, part time jobs, and internships all count.

How much can students learn from examining the human skeleton?

During a practical Functional Anatomy class at University College Roosevelt, Biomedical Sciences students worked with real human skeletal material under the supervision of Dr. Babette O. Rump.

Students carefully assembled and examined the bones, using anatomical characteristics to draw evidence-based conclusions about factors such as estimated biological s*x and age range. By comparing the pelvis, vertebrae, skull and other skeletal structures, they applied knowledge from the course in a practical and collaborative setting.

Functional Anatomy invites students to explore how the human body works and how anatomical structures support function. Through imaging, surface anatomy and real dissection materials, students learn to observe carefully, discuss their findings and translate scientific knowledge into reasoned conclusions.

The course also introduces an important ethical dimension. Alongside the scientific learning, students are encouraged to reflect on the responsibility involved in studying human remains and to consider the question:

What are the ethical costs of learning from the dead?

This combination of hands-on experience, academic depth and ethical reflection illustrates the interdisciplinary approach to Biomedical Sciences within Liberal Arts and Sciences at University College Roosevelt.

What if, instead of simply taking an exam, students had to use everything they had learned to invent an entirely new disease?

That was the challenge Professor Ger Rijkers gave students during a Biomedical Sciences class at University College Roosevelt in Middelburg.

After studying the mechanisms behind real diseases, students were asked to develop a fictional disease from scratch. They had to consider its symptoms, underlying biological mechanisms, prevalence, possible treatment and other characteristics needed to create a scientifically coherent concept.

The assignment culminated in presentations to the class, where students explained and defended their ideas before voting for their favorite, a process Ger jokingly compares to the Eurovision Song Contest.

And the winners did not leave empty-handed.

Professor Rijkers presented them with an appropriately humorous medical-themed prize, including a toy doctor's hammer and “medicines.”

Behind the fun is an important approach to learning.

Rather than only recalling information, students are challenged to apply scientific knowledge, think critically, communicate complex concepts and use creativity to solve problems.

It is one example of the interactive learning environment within Liberal Arts & Sciences at University College Roosevelt, where small classes in Middelburg give students opportunities to engage directly with their professors and actively participate in the learning process.

Behind every finished film is a team of people learning how to bring an idea to life.

Alongside their Liberal Arts and Sciences studies at University College Roosevelt in Middelburg, students have many opportunities to develop their interests through student-led societies and practical creative projects.

For their latest production, Dead Man’s Hand, members of LENSE, UCR’s cinematography and photography student society, took responsibility for every stage of the filmmaking process.

Students wrote the screenplay, developed the characters, directed the performances, planned the cinematography, operated the camera, recorded sound, designed the sets and costumes, promoted the production and acted in the film themselves.

In this series of videos, members of the cast and crew explain their individual roles. The director, cinematographer and assistant director also reflect on the less visible side of filmmaking: the detailed preparation, maintaining continuity between shots, coordinating a large group and sustaining the energy required throughout long production days.

The experience was demanding, but it also gave students the opportunity to practise valuable skills in:

Creative and technical problem-solving
Leadership and project management
Communication and collaboration
Visual storytelling
Performing and presenting
Working towards a shared goal

Projects like this illustrate the active student community at University College Roosevelt. Students are encouraged to take initiative, explore interests beyond their academic programme and create meaningful projects together in Middelburg, Zeeland.
