Although the summer holidays have already started for the students, our researchers are still out in the field gathering knowledge. 'Floating Solar' is one of these projects. 'Floating Solar' focuses on the environmental impacts as well as public perception of floating solar panels on Lake Westvoorne. Oysters can form quite high beds. They grown on top of each other or even on top of other shellfish. Because these Japanese mussels have not a lot of natural predators in the Netherlands, they out competed our natural mussel population. Several projects are looking at how to bring back the balance between these two.

Little groins like these help the coastal area fight against erosion. The currents are weakened which makes it harder to pick up the soil, as well as transporting it back into deeper waters.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Look at this crab, getting very defensive. It is ready not only to protect itself from large predators (aka us), but also fight to protect his piece of land against other crabs that might try to steal it.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
During several of our projects we have created some nice habitats for crabs just like these in addition to raising the resilience of the Netherlands.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Often there is a lot happening at once when you get to a field site. Some start monitoring right away, someone else gets the drone out and others focus on what interesting stuff can be found in the area. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Using a drone to get images is a newer type of technology used in monitoring projects. It might save a lot of money compared to the traditional monitoring methods. This is what our project Low Cost, High Tech is trying to find out!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Even when the temperatures drop, there is still plenty of fieldwork to be done. Luckily our minor students don't mind the cold that much and are able to monitor the changes in a newly changed inter-tidal area.

Tracking changes in a certain area can be quite time consuming, especially looking when the soil is as soft as this one! In our project 'Low Cost, High Tech' we focus on finding new monitoring options that include newer inventions which will hopefully make monitoring go a lot faster! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
