I remember classes where the teacher spoke for almost the entire hour. Words filled the room. Explanations, examples, side stories. Everything was there – except space.

No one asked what we understood. No one noticed when attention drifted. No one paused long enough for a thought to land.

It looked like teaching. But it didn’t feel like learning.

There were moments when I had a question – not fully formed, not ready to be said out loud. But the moment passed. The room had already moved on.

In moments like that, the teacher has to do something surprisingly difficult: step back. Listen not just for correct answers, but for hesitation, confusion, curiosity. For what is not being said. Because the real lesson is often hiding there.

The best teachers I’ve known didn’t fill the space. They made space.

I’m holding a book.
Originally written in Czech.
Translated into Dutch.
Lent to me by my Belgian colleague.

Three countries in my hands.
And a language that is not mine.

Do I understand every word?
No.

Do I sometimes reread the same sentence four times?
Yes.

Do I feel the temptation to give it back and say,
“Sorry, this is too much for my brain”?
Absolutely.

And yet — I keep reading.

Not because I enjoy suffering.
Not because I want to prove something.
And not because learning is always joyful.

Actually, learning often feels like walking slightly uphill.
Your legs burn a little.
Your breathing changes.
You become aware of yourself.

That’s where mindfulness enters.

When I say “learning makes me happy,” I don’t mean it’s always pleasant.

Sometimes it’s frustrating.
Sometimes it presses on the edges of my competence.
Sometimes it whispers: you’re not good enough for this.

Lifelong learning is not only a resource.
It can also be a burden. A pressure. An expectation.

But so is life — and we keep living.

The question is not:
“Is this difficult?”

The question is:
“Do I want to grow here?”

There’s a Polish saying: strach ma wielkie oczy — fear has big eyes.
Up close, things are often less terrifying than they looked from a distance.

This book is difficult.
And it is also expanding me.

Both things are true.

Learning is not a soft, pastel-colored concept.
It’s textured. It resists. It stretches.

And maybe that stretching — done consciously — is where the happiness lives.

Not in ease.
But in becoming.

People say “2026 is the new 2016”, so here’s mine.

2016: newly moved to the Netherlands, confused by bicycles, relearning how to ride one as an adult.

2026: standing next to a Mustang — with a driving license I almost never use.

Some skills fade.

Some become part of who you are.

I didn’t just learn how to cycle.

I learned a way of living I now can’t imagine giving up.

That’s lifelong learning — quiet, embodied, and deeply personal.

Learning in your 40s has its own rhythm. I’m finally starting to respect mine.

I did my second Master’s in my late 30s.
Now I’m doing a PhD in my 40s.
And yes – sometimes I’m surrounded by people in their 20s and I can feel the difference.

Not in a bad way.
Just… honestly.

I notice I need a bit more time now.
More repetition.
More space to let things land.

As a psychologist, I know there’s a reason for this.
We talk about fluid intelligence (speed, quick reactions) and crystallized intelligence (experience, patterns, perspective).
One may slow down slightly with age, the other keeps growing – and honestly, that second one has become my superpower.

Especially now, during perimenopause, when my energy and focus don’t always follow a neat schedule.

So instead of pushing harder, I’m learning to work with my brain, not against it.
To set realistic goals.
To stay curious without being cruel to myself.
To learn in ways that support my wellbeing – not drain it.

That’s also how I work with others.
Whether it’s learning English, finding direction, or simply staying on track when life gets busy and noisy – I care about how you learn, not just what you achieve.

I’m sharing this in case you’re in a similar season:
learning, changing, questioning – and wondering if you’re doing it “right.”

You probably are.
You might just need a different rhythm.
