Rethinking Memory Policies: Concepts, Challenges, and New Directions
📍 Rome, Italy | 📅 24–28 July 2027
29th World Congress of Political Science

This open panel, convened by Dr. Polina Zavershinskaia and chaired by Dr. Matteo Bassoli, invites contributions exploring the evolving field of memory policies and its intersections with public policy and memory studies.

Contributions may address:
• Memory politics and public policy
• Processes of institutionalising collective memory
• Policy entrepreneurs and memory policies
• Multilevel governance
• Memory policies in democratic and authoritarian contexts
• Comparative perspectives across regions
• The impact of conflict on memory policy-making

The panel particularly welcomes early-career researchers and PhD students, as well as comparative and interdisciplinary approaches that expand research beyond Eurocentric and post-World War II European case studies.

The talk is part of the Expert Talks series organised within the MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowship project “VIRUS – Violence by Russia in Ukraine: Examining the Implications of Its Narrative Justification in Russia and Europe,” funded by the European Union.

(Post)Coloniality & Memory — Special Issue of Memory Studies Review

This special issue, edited by Simina Dragoș, John Njenga Karugia, Sahra Rausch, and Meghan Tinsley, invites contributions advancing a systematic postcolonial turn in memory studies and examining the relationship between memory, coloniality, postcolonial theory, and decolonial thought.

Topics include, but are not limited to:

Palestine: Past, Present and Future Narratives, a new interdisciplinary book series from CEU Press, critically explores identity narratives and collective memories of Palestine across historical periods, geographies, and academic disciplines.

📢 The MSA 2027 Conference Portal is now OPEN for submissions!

We are excited to invite scholars, researchers, practitioners, and memory activists to submit proposals for the MSA2027 Annual Conference, taking place 14–18 June 2027 at Lund University, Sweden.

Under the theme “Memory, Responsibility, Hope,” the conference will explore how we engage with the past, the responsibilities involved in remembering, and the ways memory can help us imagine and create more hopeful futures.

The Spatial Life of Trauma: Public Space, Memory and Future-Making

This upcoming edited volume explores trauma as a cumulative, time-space process and examines how public spaces can shape, transmit, negotiate, and transform experiences of trauma and memory.

Contributions are invited from scholars and practitioners across urban studies, architecture, planning, geography, sociology, anthropology, history, memory studies, disaster and climate studies, and related fields. Topics include public space and traumatic memory, commemoration, everyday practices of care, spatial justice, and future-making.

Central European University Press invites book proposals for its new series Global Heritage and Memory Studies in the Present, exploring the dynamics of heritage and memory through transnational, interdisciplinary, and integrated approaches.

The series welcomes monographs and edited volumes examining topics including heritage and memory politics, nationalism and ethnicity, landscapes and mass violence, heritage preservation and conservation, archaeology and material culture, (dark) tourism, diaspora and colonial memory, aesthetics, absence and forgetting, mourning, and performative reenactments.

Mnemohistory: Towards Long-Term Computational Research Approaches

TMG – Journal of Media History invites empirical contributions exploring how computational methods and large-scale media corpora can deepen our understanding of mnemohistory and the ways the past has been remembered across decades and different media.

Contributions may address computational approaches to print, broadcasting, film, television, social media, and audiovisual corpora, with critical reflection on their methodological possibilities and limitations.
