Inside the mind of a master procrastinator | Tim Urban 26/11/2018

The last week or two I have had some great conversations with students on a number of topics. They all boiled down to (for me) similar conclusions.

Firstly, students coming to me for advice have almost always got the answers "within" themselves.

Why do I have anxiety?
Why do I study in the way that I do?
What is stopping me from succeeding?

Normally there is something in an individual's psychology which is causing these behaviours - often a couple of short questions has revealed these, in many cases.

When did you feel this way before?
What's your strongest memory about this feeling in the past?
What do *you* think the problem is?

Secondly, students ask: "how do I change?" or "how can I get better?"

The answer here becomes almost superfluous in light of the first part. Once we begin to look at the "monster under the bed" - identify why we're scared or behaving in the way that we do, we are able to in the clear light of day, identify how to change.

Whether this is the behaviour of procrastinators:-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arj7oStGLkU

The change from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset:-

We have, through these meetings began to work on making each of us better versions of ourselves; more resilient and more capable each day. Growing into stronger individuals.

Thanks to those who came to see me, and looking forward to more great conversations next week.

On Friday the 19th of January 2018, the National masterday Bio-sciences 2018 will take place, organized by the Landelijk Overleg Biologiestudenten (LOBS) in collaboration with the Dutch Institute for Biology (NIBI) and various universities.

There will be an informationmarked from 15:00h until 18:00h in the Marinus Ruppertgebouw at the Uithof in Utrecht. Master programs from all over the country will present themselves and in addition, labour market-orientated lectures and workshops will be organized.

It is important to orientate in time in order to make the best choice for a master, thus we also recommend second or first year students to visit the Masterday.

Participation in the Masterday is completely free! You can register viahttps://docs.google.com/forms/d/1zvypjiIcHowM7tEOGKPcinexLCybIC6nP44FRl7bY9I/
