In this interactive lecture, architect Michael Pawlyn, known for his work with the Eden Project and Architects Declare, made the case for regenerative design over conventional sustainability. He highlighted the relevance of switching to the regenerative design model, in order to optimise positives. We are truly honoured to be hosting Michael Pawlyn tomorrow. Michael has dedicated the greater part of his career as an architect to the promotion of biomimetic and regenerative design as a viable option. He is of the opinion that the design and construction industry has a responsibility towards the environment. He has demonstrated his commitment to the environmental cause time and again, through the Sahara Forest Project, that aims to provide food, water and renewable energy in hot, arid regions, and enable revegetation. Now he is one of the key voices behind Architects Declare, under which design and architecture firms from around the world have declared a climate and biodiversity crisis, and have recognised the need for the construction industry to realise its climate goals.

Michael's lecture will focus on the need to shift to regenerative design, rather than continuing with the sustainable design model, in order to be able to address the ongoing environmental crisis. Join us at 19.00 tomorrow, in the MBB Aula.

At the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting, one of the key areas of discussion was the transition into a circular economy. In the decade that governments and stakeholders around the world are expected to deliver on the Sustainable Development Goals, there is an emerging consensus that a circular economy may be integral to the achievement of the SDGs.

As the principle goes, in a circular economy, resources are continuously regenerated and reused, eliminating waste and delivering net profits. The regenerative design model is key to the transition into a circular economy, if that is to be the goal.

Is the 2020-2030 decade to be that of regenerative design and the circular economy? Join Michael Pawlyn on the 4th of March, as he sheds some light on how this transition is to take shape.

In May 2019, 17 high-profile architecture firms from the UK declared a climate and biodiversity crisis, calling for a paradigm shift in the construction industry, towards creating regenerative and self-sustaining infrastructure systems. The movement understood it was high time for construction and design professionals to acknowledge their responsibility towards the planet, and set up and achieve their climate goals.

The list of signatories has now grown into a massive 897, with Architects Declare now having chapters all over the world, from Norway to Africa, and assisting designers in developing regenerative design models, to realise their climate goals.

On the 4th of March, Ambassador Lectures is hosting Michael Pawlyn, one of the founders of Architects Declare, for a lecture on regenerative design and its potential to address the climate and biodiversity crisis.

In this world of resource limitations, it is time that we started envisioning the circular economy as a practical next step. The circular economy designs out waste and pollution, keeps products and materials constantly in use, and regenerates natural systems. The case for regeneration extends well and beyond agriculture, to restoring the abundance of our water resources, to stepping away from the values of extraction, exploitation, and separation.

Situated in Cornwall, UK, the Eden Project is a massive tourist attraction. From the picturesque biomes, to the vast botanical gardens, the entire structure makes use of biomimicry and innovation. If you are trying to console yourself by believing that sustainability is the answer to all our climate and resource-related problems, you may want to rethink your position. Michael Pawlyn argues that the degree of change required to meet CO2 reduction targets set by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, will never be achieved by sustainable design. The damages inflicted upon the planet in the past fifty years, can only be repaired by shifting to the optimisation of positives.

In the simplest of terms, biomimicry is a practice that learns from and mimics the strategies found in nature to solve human design challenges.

An interesting example is perhaps that of the Shinkansen bullet train in J*pan. When first tested, the bullet trains produced a huge sonic boom every time they emerged from a tunnel, due to changing air pressures. To prevent the noise pollution that this would generate, designers took inspiration from the Kingfisher bird, known for traveling between mediums of air and water with very little noise. And voila- the answer was designing the bullet train with a long beak-shaped nose, just like the Kingfisher!

Since the early 90s, sustainability has been cited as the answer to resolve the climate and ecological crises, in order to protect our future. But is sustainability adequate enough for us to be able to shoulder this responsibility of protecting our planet?

Michael Pawlyn believes that the approach that conventional sustainable thinking undertakes, of merely mitigating the negatives, is not enough, if we are to fulfill the dream of an ecologically secure future. He believes regenerative design is the answer, that the development of renewable systems, where output is always greater than input, will generate a circular economy, that is ultimately beneficial for all species.

Join us this 4th of March, at the MBB Aula, where Michael Pawlyn will provide an insight into the regenerative design model.
