Young Researchers Network - Maastricht

Young Researchers Network - Maastricht In early 2013 we decided a change of pace was needed to keep up with the ever changing condition of young researchers within Dutch Universities.

This is reflected by the change of our 13 years old, and in our renovated mission. In 1988, several PhD candidates from Maastricht University decided to organize themselves in an association. Between the beginning of 2000 and 2013, this association went by the name of ProVUM (Promovendi Vereniging Universiteit Maastricht). Becoming the "Young Researchers Network - Maastricht", we have abandoned the Institutional representation, which had become largely irrelevant, and we are now focusing on facilitation of networking and knowledge sharing among young researchers, to promote excellence and support early career researchers within and around the University of Maastricht

I very rarely do this, but I wholeheartedly enjoyed writing this article with Noel Hyndman, and I truly believe this is an issue, in both teaching and research, of the utmost importance at present time. I am sharing this in the hope it may provide food for thought, and perhaps some ammunition, in th...

We just proved poverty is not random. It has a mathematical fractal property. Working with the amazing Prof. Dr. Dounia ZAIDOUNI and Prof. Dr. ikram El Asri, we ran NASA's Global Relative Deprivation Index through fractal geometry. The results stopped us cold: โ†’ Fractal dimension: D = 1.60 ยฑ 0.40...

We asked 26 AI models for 24,518 scientific references. 55% of them point to papers that do not exist, and only 15% were fully correct. In May we showed in The Lancet that thousands of references in published medical papers cite studies that were never written. This time we wanted to see how that ha...

For years, scientists have relied primarily on radio imaging from techniques like very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) to study jets from the active galactic nuclei of supermassive black holes. This allows for the detection of broad, unresolved features, called components, moving at what appear....

Antonio Damasio has been working to solve the conundrum of consciousness almost since modern neuroscience first began to tackle the problem over three decades ago. In the early 1990s, the Portuguese neuroscientist was among the first to publish research suggesting that feelings such as hunger and pain might provide the foundations for consciousness, that familiar experience of being alive, awake, and self-aware in the world.

Today, Damasio has plenty of scientific company in his empirical approach to consciousness. But among consciousness researchers there are many prominent and conflicting theories of what consciousness is and how it functions, which differ significantly. Damasio belongs to the camp that believes that consciousness requires a body. Other theorists argue that all you need is sophisticated information processing architecture, which could exist without any kind of fleshy home.

Damasio has written many books about his work and ideas over the years, starting with Descartes Error: Emotion, Reason, and the Human Brain, published in 1994. Now he has published another volume: Natural intelligence & the Logic of Consciousness.

Nautilus spoke with Damasio about why he has more confidence in his theory concerning the biological imperative for consciousness now than ever, whether a robot body could develop AI consciousness, and how natural intelligence could explain someone like Donald Trump.
