Maastricht University (UM) is the most international university in the Netherlands and one of the best young universities in the world. Located in the heart of Europe, the university stands out for its international character, innovative education model and multidisciplinary approach to research and education. At UM, we work with the cooperative education model called Problem-Based Learning (PBL) that provides a small-scale and personal approach where knowledge is born in discussions that go beyond simple memorisation and a shallow understanding of concepts. Research in UM is inspired by topical issues such as sustainability, European integration, healthy ageing and the influence of technological developments on society. And to us, you're not one of many students filling a seat in a crowded lecture hall. Instead, you're a contributing member of our academic community. To study in Maastricht is to study with an international perspective. When compared to other universities in the Netherlands and its surrounding countries, Maastricht University has the highest ratio of international students, representing all corners of the globe. Almost half of our students and one third of our academic staff come from abroad, together representing over 100 different nationalities. This international flavour is infused into every aspect of our education and student life.

From ballroom to courtroom: inside the places that shaped Maastricht Law ⚖️

A former provincial government building. A tower inspired by Siena. A ballroom now used as a mock courtroom. And a hidden courtyard garden known well by generations of law students.

The Maastricht University Faculty of Law of Law's buildings tell a remarkable story. Since the first 99 students started studying law at Maastricht University in 1982, the faculty has grown into an international community of 3,500 students from 44 countries – while making some of Maastricht’s historic spaces its own.

What stories are hidden behind Maastricht University’s historic walls?

During the Open Monuments Days on 12 and 13 September, visitors can explore the fifteenth-century Nieuwenhof Monastery at Zwingelput 4. Join a guided tour through a building that has served as a beguinage, monastery, poorhouse and orphanage, visit the free 50 Years of UM exhibition, and enjoy live jazz by Funkollective.

With this year’s theme, Resilient Heritage, the weekend also opens up heritage across Maastricht – from the Boschstraatkwartier to the ENCI site.

Weekend van de Wetenschap in Maastricht 🎓

What do you want to pass on to the next generation?

A legacy to Maastricht University can help turn the values and ideals you care about today into research, education and opportunities for new talent tomorrow.

Together with all Dutch university foundations, Universiteitsfonds Limburg is raising awareness of leaving a legacy to science. The campaign shares the personal motivations of people who have chosen to include their alma mater in their will — showing that a legacy is about more than financial support. It is a way to help shape the future.

UM’s first employee started before the university even existed

In July 1970, 20-year-old Bep Weijenberg-Habets became secretary to Sjeng Tans and Ben Niessen, who were working to bring a medical faculty to Maastricht. Five years later, the 'Rijksuniversiteit Limburg' was officially established.

For Bep, the arrival of the university was about much more than education. With the Limburg mines closing, she saw how urgently the region needed new opportunities. Years later, she returned to UM herself to study law, graduating cm laude.

As part of UM’s 50th anniversary, Bep looks back on the university’s earliest beginnings, and on what UM came to mean for both the region and her own life.

Opening of the Academic Year 2026/27: a recap 🎓

Yesterday’s Opening of the Academic Year set the tone for the next 50 years of Maastricht University.

Loes Damhof challenged us with an inspiring keynote on Futures Literacy, followed by a thought-provoking panel discussion with our regional partners on the future of UM and its region. World-renowned ballet dancer Igone de Jongh took to the stage for a captivating performance.

We also celebrated this year’s award winners: Dr Niels van Best received the Hustinx Prize for Science, while Anaïs Hublet received the UM Student Prize for her work with Tauli. Congratulations to both!

A memorable start to the academic year, and to the next chapter of UM. 💯

UM Student Award 2026 🏆

During the Opening of the Academic Year 2026/27, we celebrated this year’s nominees: Efe Satici and Aliya Sara Akdogan for their work with the Human Rights Association Maastricht; Anaïs Hublet for Tauli, which provides cervical cancer screening and supports local communities in Malawi; and Vladislav Minaev Viacheslavovich for his work to preserve the endangered Ket language.

Three very different initiatives, each showing how students can use their knowledge, skills and commitment to make a difference.

🏆 Dr Niels van Best receives the 2026 Hustinx Science Award

How can the environment we grow up in influence our health later in life?

During today’s Opening of the Academic Year 2026/27, Dr Niels van Best received the Hustinx Science Award for his innovative research into how microbes in our living environment shape the gut microbiome and immune system during early life.

🏛️ Maastricht University has officially opened the academic year 2026/27.

In her opening, UM President Pamela Habibović welcomed all the guests and also this year’s keynote speaker: Loes Damhof, Chairholder of the UNESCO Chair on Futures Literacy at Hanze University of Applied Sciences.

“Today, we will look ahead and think about the future we want to shape. And as we just heard, Maastricht University means something different to everyone but clearly holds a special place in the city, now and in the years to come. With that in mind, a very warm welcome to our keynote speaker, Loes Damhof, Chairholder of the UNESCO Chair on Futures Literacy. We look forward to hearing your keynote.”
