Leiden Humanities - Master's Buddy Programme

🍻 Looking back at the PubQuiz of the Humanities Buddy Programme, held a couple weeks ago.
🇳🇱 Since the PubQuiz took place in the week of the International Student, the theme was international students in The Netherlands and Dutch students abroad.
❓In teams of five, participants shared a drink and laughs while trying to win first prize!

🍂A couple weeks ago, the Humanities Buddy Programme had its visit to the city of The Hague!

🏙 Participants got a walking tour put together by one of our buddies, Esa, and they got to explore the city and its history in the afternoon.

🕊 The tour ended with the Peace Palace, one of the city's landmarks, after which participants got a drink together at a local pub.

🍂 With the arrival of the cold weather and the semester in full swing, the Humanities Buddy Programme hosted a cozy event last Friday in the POPcorner!

📚 For this Book Swap, students brought books to exchange for a new read and come together other participants of the Programme.

🫖 Participants got to enjoy some tea, snacks, literary impressions, and laughs on a rainy day.

⛵️ Last Thursday, the Humanities Buddy Programme had its iconic Boat Tour through the Leiden Canals

⛅️ Despite the Summer being gone, the participants enjoyed a rain-free tour

🇳🇱 During the tour, the lovely captains gave our participants insights into Leiden and its role Dutch history

🥳 Last Friday, the Buddy Programme hosted its first event of this academic year!

🎈Our buddies and programme coordinators welcomed the new students and got to know each other.

🍻 They shared some drinks and laughs and heard a few words by Leonor, the student programme coordinator, and Gianelle, the staff coordinator.

The end of the semester is near, and free time and hot summer days are (hopefully) on the horizon. To everyone in the Buddy Programme (and extended family):

A little over two weeks ago, we organised a very special end-term event! Together with our colleagues at Science Faculty Buddy Programme, we closed off our semester of activities with a collaborative barbecue! 🤤 Despite some questionable weather predictions, it remained a sunny afternoon for both programmes to mingle, enjoy an assortment of foods from the barbecue and beyond, and toast to the (coming) end of the semester. Cheers!

Last week Thursday we organised our spring semester boardgame night at café de keyzer leiden. Students and Buddies joined us for drinks and a number of boardgames. We built a tower out of miniature chairs, tried not to topple another tower (of blocks, this time), and explored a pun-filled dungeon of monsters and magical artefacts.

Last week we organised this semester's Leiden Boat Tour. In wonderful sunny weather, we stepped aboard one of the Leidse Rederij's canal boats to explore the many canals of Leiden’s old town, while enjoying some refreshments and snacks. We saw low bridges, historical buildings and painted-rat-infested boat tunnels (the rats were just murals) to name but a few highlights.

Last week we gathered at the wonderful commonroom of Leiden University's Beehive Student Centre in The Hague for our Potluck Dinner! Together, we shared in each other's cultures and cuisines with everyone bringing a meal and/or food item typical to their culture, or which held a special significance to them. An evening of good food, good stories and good company!

We'll let this photo speak for itself, and we invite everyone (whether you attended or not) to share your favourite meal, or a significant meal from your home country! 🤗

A little over a week ago we organised a guided tour through Leiden's Hortus Botanicus! Together with our guide, we explored the Hortus' gardens and greenhouses, and learned much about its most prominent plants and flowers, as well as some of its long history. We even took a trip to the tropics by visiting Hortus' tropical greenhouse, a challenge for all wearers of glasses and wielders of camera's, as you can see from the last picture. 😂
