The NINO (Netherlands Institute for the Near East) sponsors travel to the RAI68 from the Middle East and North Africa through a new program:

NINO Leiden NINO initiates, supports, and conducts scholarly research in the civilizations of the Near East from the ancient to the early modern period. In particular, it concentrates on the archaeology, history, languages, and cultures of Egypt, Levant, Anatolia, Mesopotamia, and Persia.

We are proud & happy to be hosting the 68th Rencontre Assyriologique Internationale next summer (17-20 July 2023) — Nolke wrote a brief news item about de previous RAI's in Leiden on the conference website:

The Rencontre and Leiden - 1952-2023 The Rencontre Assyriologique Internationale and the city of Leiden share a long history: the city is looking forward to hosting the RAI for the eighth time now! The very first time was in 1952.

The International Association for Assyriology is looking for a new editor of its news letter MAR-SHIPRIM. https://iaassyriology.com/mar-shiprim/

The post-holder will be responsible for collecting and editing contributions for the newsletter. They will be supervised by a member of the Board nominated to oversee the website. We aim to release new material on a regular basis throughout the year.

The post-holder will receive a small stipend.

Geheimen van het spijkerschrift... Een erg leuke video gemaakt door Britse collega's!

The ancient secrets revealed by deciphered tablets - BBC Ideas When cuneiform was cracked, it gave us some astonishing insights into the ancient world. Made in partnership with The Open University.

We kijken erg uit naar het symposium over "Antieke Archieven en de Archival Turn", met als sprekers Katelijn Vandorpe, Rebecca van Hove, Eden Dijkstra en Joëlle Kraaijeveld.

Venster op het verleden? De Archival Turn Theory en antieke archieven Archieven uit de oudheid zijn vaak de enige bron die historici tot hun beschikking hebben bij het doen van onderzoek. Vaak worden deze archieven gezien als een ‘venster op het verleden’ waarmee we de geschiedenis objectief kunnen reconstrueren. Maar is dit wel zo?

Vijf jaar fantastisch onderzoek voor de boeg bij onze buren in Leiden! Gefeliciteerd, Peter Bisschop!

European grant for research into Indian scriptures: ‘This is what our understanding of Hinduism is based on’ Professor Peter Bisschop has been awarded an ERC Advanced Grant. He will invest the 2.5 million euros in his research into puranas: ancient texts, commonly written in Sanskrit, that are up to fifteen hundred years old.

Volcanic eruptions and the Mesopotamian climate ... Rhonda McGovern (Dublin) will present results of her research on ice core data and the Babylonian astronomical diaries, this coming Monday 2 May, in Vrieshof 4/004a. Open to all! The lecture is organised by the NINO in Leiden.
