🇬🇧Hidden within the landscapes of Limburg are traces of a distant past. In Baarlo, research has been conducted for many years on prehistoric burial mounds and the surrounding landscape. This research continues to reveal more about these burial mounds and the people who constructed them thousands of years ago.
The project contributes not only to our understanding of the past, but also explores how these burial mounds can be preserved and managed in a sustainable way. The aim is to transform this forgotten landscape into a meaningful place where the stories of Baarlo's past can be rediscovered and shared.
During the open day our students can tell you all about the work they do at this excavation and you can learn what burial mounds look like in a modern landscape. Come and take a look on July 8th!

Underwater archaeology instead of on land? No problem for our students! From June 1st to June 15th, a group of our students participated in an underwater field school. This fieldschool was a collaboration between Leiden university and Universidad de Cádiz (Universiteit van Cádiz), with support from the Rijksdienst for Rijksdienst Cultureel Erfgoed . For two weeks the students learned everything about Maritime Archaeology: reading an underwater Landscape, recognizing archaeological features, drawing underwater and much more. The site for the fieldwork were the bays of Cala Higuera and Isleta del Moro, with largely Roman and Medieval finds.
Of course a new blogpost was published on our blog and can be found in the bio links!

Excavating in the sun is always a treat🌞
Here you see some of our first year bachelors students who are excavating in Geffen (Oss) right now. On dutch excavations, you frequently get rained on. So when the sun comes out to play, it is extra enjoyable!

Leiden University is always at the forefront of technology and innovation. Our digital archaeologists have set out to develop an archaeological virtual assistant: iDig. Trained on the geological map of the Netherlands, it can find archaeological material underneath buildings and layers upon layers of soil!
