Power outages are experienced by many Africans, and it is a problem in Ghana too. A Minority member on Parliament’s Mines and Energy Committee, says that Ghana "has enough resources to provide adequate power, and the irregular power situation is a clear indication of the government’s mismanagement of these resources." 'Politics' is obviously an area well researched by anthropologists, but did you know there is also something like 'the anthropology of fuels'? Would you rather research politics or energy-use patterns?

Pablo Cabada & Sylvia van Oevelen did research in the mining town of Tarkwa on goldmining and water governance. They did their fieldwork as interns with , an engineering firm in need of knowledge about social aspects of water management. The two built excellent contacts with gold miners and policy makers during their three months stay and their research led to a joint publication in the top academic journal AFRICA! Mara Lin Visser did research in the neighborhood of in Accra. As a student in the specialisation she made a film about , dressing styles and . Her film ‘Unity: scapes of ’ was widely praised and shown at different film festivals, e.g. RAI Film Fest and . As an intern Museum Volkenkunde, she had the task to commission dresses with tailors for the exhibition “Things that Matter” Tropenmuseum. These commissions served as innovative research method.
