‘Jacq, you’re also a father, besides being a writer, right? You have a daughter.’

In a 1996 radio interview, journalist Martin Šimek asks Jacq Vogelaar (1944–2013) this question in his typical, quasi-naive and disarming style. The latter’s understated response immediately reveals something about the sensitive private territory the conversation is moving toward: ‘Yes, whether that makes me a father… Nominally, yes.’

In 1997, Jacq Vogelaar, who was primarily known as an experimental prose writer and as a literary critic, published a poetry collection for the first time in over thirty years: Klaaglied om Ka, which was released as a bibliophile edition with notable illustrations. What prompted this poetic comeback?

Student Theses is in de afgelopen jaren uitgegroeid tot een omvangrijke en veelgebruikte collectie. De 60.000 bachelor- en masterscripties van 100 opleidingen die nu via Student Theses doorzoekbaar zijn, worden samen jaarlijks meer dan 600.000 keer gedownload. Hiermee wordt de zichtbaarheid van onderzoek door studenten vergroot en kunnen studenten hun werk inzetten voor hun verdere ontwikkeling.

Namazi Hospital in Shiraz, Iran, celebrated its inauguration on 27 May 1955. This photo album from our Special Collections marked the momentous occasion. What can these images tell us about Iran’s modernization in the 1950s?

Then situated in a quiet area surrounded by gardens, the hospital and the people working there are portrayed as embodying the nation’s drive toward healthcare advancement and social progress. It fit perfectly in Reza Shah Pahlavi's 1930s modernization vision of centralisation, modern governance, and national strength, which included large reforms in infrastructure, administration, education, and public health. The album portrays his successor Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi working to carry on this vision.

Simultaneously, the album anchors the new hospital to Shiraz's history, through landmarks: Qorān Gate, Persepolis, and the Tomb of Hafez. In that way, the images put modern civic life squarely within Iran’s rich historical landscape.

Twee nieuwe lichtkoepels en installaties voor verwarming en luchtbehandeling in de universiteitsbibliotheek, aansprekende publieksactiviteiten, een Strategisch Publicatieraamwerk en een nieuw collectebeleidsplan. Over dit alles en nog veel meer lees je in ons Jaarverslag 2025:

Niet alleen werden de lichtkoepels van de universiteitsbibliotheek vervangen, ook realiseerden we nieuwe faciliteiten als de Learning Zone voor onderwijs en het Kartini Auditorium voor lezingen en andere publieksevenementen. Daarnaast werd het versteende plein voor de universiteitsbibliotheek heringericht met nieuwe beplanting en zitjes onder de bomen.

Studenten maakten intensief gebruik van de studieplekken in onze bibliotheken in Leiden en Den Haag. Beginnend studenten hielpen we op weg bij het gebruik van onze diensten voor onderwijs en onderzoek. Daarnaast adviseerden, trainden en ondersteunden we onderzoekers op het gebied van datamanagement, open access publiceren, het gebruik van digitale data en auteursrechten. Voor het belangstellende publiek organiseerden we uiteenlopende activiteiten, met dit jaar speciale aandacht voor de viering van 450 jaar Universiteit Leiden.

In 2025 stelde Universiteit Leiden haar eerste Strategisch publicatieraamwerk vast dat nu door de verschillende wetenschappelijke instituten wordt uitgewerkt tot een publicatiestrategie, een proces dat de UBL ondersteunt en coördineert. Daarnaast publiceerden we ons nieuwe collectiebeleidsplan voor het vormen, beheren en beschikbaar stellen van de collectie voor de periode 2025-2030 en evalueerden we tussentijds het meerjarenbeleidsplan van de UBL: Open for All.

In the catacombs of subterranean Rome, antiquarians and Christian archaeologists discovered a beautifully painted room. They leveraged this 17th-century discovery into a historical narrative that persists to this day: the myth that the catacombs were an exclusive hiding place and the burial site of early Christians only.

Gloria Moorman is currently studying the material properties of this book, Roma Sotterranea, in our Special Collections, as well as in the Bibliotheca Thysiana. She received a grant from the new Bibliotheca Thysiana Fellowship programme to conduct her research.

"When I first encountered this book in the Vatican Library, I immediately felt that I couldn’t really take it at face value; the book is trying to persuade a little too hard. It's just too ornate. Too beautifully illustrated. The binding is too grand, especially for the materiality of the story itself. A relatively small archaeological site gave rise to an Atlantis narrative of sorts: a lost civilization of Christians buried (living on) underground. Visual evidence in the shape of fragmentary wall paintings suited almost too nicely, there was lots of room for interpretation."

"My thesis is that the publication of these volumes, sponsored by the Church, was meant to convey the status of the research itself to rulers, dignitaries, and scholars; supporters and detractors alike. It produced proof that the origins of the Church were ‘pure’ at a time when the institution came under immense pressure from reformatory powers. It's a great example of early fake news being spread to influential people in beautiful packaging. There are even reports of Italian silk gloves being sent with the book to sweeten its Catholic message to the Protestant English court."

But how did this myth really spread? "That's the question I'm trying to answer by looking at the material properties of the book and its provenance in the dozens of places it is held in library collections."

Ze bespreken uitgebreid de diverse en interactieve manieren waarop lezers met deze boeken omgingen binnen hun persoonlijke en gemeenschappelijke gebedspraktijk.

Enkele van de oudste foto's gemaakt in Japan waren vandaag eenmalig van dichterbij dan ooit te bekijken in de Universiteitsbibliotheek. Onze conservator fotografie Maartje van den Heuvel gaf uitgebreide uitleg bij de bijzondere relatie tussen Japan en Nederland op het vlak van fotografie. Deze vaak unieke beelden, die worden bewaard in onze Bijzondere Collecties, spreken boekdelen over deze relatie en de introductie van het medium in Japan.

Wilt u meer weten over de 19e-eeuwse relatie tussen Nederland en Japan op het vlak van fotografie? Zet 24 september dan vast in uw agenda. Dan verschijnt 'Licht over Dejima', een gloednieuw boek van de Japanse fotohistoricus Akiyoshi Tani en Maartje van den Heuvel. Tegelijkertijd opent ook een gelijknamige tentoonstelling in het SieboldHuis. Tijdens de tentoonstelling organiseren wij in de UB nog een aantal van dit soort bijeenkomsten met authentiek fotomateriaal.
