The International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS) is a research and exchange platform based in the university city of Leiden, the Netherlands

IIAS hosts a range of visiting fellows who benefit from one of the world’s largest
concentration of scholars and collections on Asia. IIAS addresses current and long term historical trends through its three research clusters: Global Asia, Asian Cities and Asian Heritages. IIAS encourages the multi-disciplinary and comparative study of Asia and promotes national and international cooperation, thus

linking the expertise of scholars and practitioners. It acts as an interface between academic and non-academic partners including cultural, social and policy organisations. IIAS offers a unique range of communication instruments enabling it to reach out to thousands of academics and professionals worldwide. The Newsletter enjoys a global audience of 13,000 subscribers. It features research, thematic articles, reviews, photo essays, announcements and institutional news.

Introduction Simon Winant

🔸 Dr. Simon Winant is an IIAS Research Fellow with a fellowship from the J. Gonda Foundation of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.

🔸He recently obtained his PhD in Indian Languages and Culture from Ghent University, Belgium. He works on the intersection of Mahābhārata Studies, Jain Studies, and Kāvya. The aim of his current project is to explore scribal allusions and references to later works of Sanskrit kāvya found in Mahābhārata manuscripts used in the Critical Edition of the Mahābhārata by the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute in Pune.

🔹 This episode features a conversation about the recent documentary Ingatan dari Timor or Memories of Timor. The film was produced by Rita and directed by Ari Trismana, and it was released by the documentary production house WatchDoc. Memories of Timor explores the violent history of Timor Leste, which is often omitted from Indonesian textbooks and concealed from Indonesian students.

🔸Dawa Lokyitsang, IIAS Research Fellow 2025-2026, will be giving a presentation as part of Cultural Anthropology and Devolopmental Sociology (CADS) research seminar.

🔸“Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork among former students of these schools, Dawa Lokyitsang traces how this rupture became the ground for something unexpected: creative peer-based kinship networks, bound by shared national and personal loss, and by shared aspirations for an anticolonial future. Her broader work follows Tibetans' decolonizing practices at the intersection of developing Asian settler colonialisms, reactive anticolonial nationalisms, and creative Indigenous sovereign futurisms. This talk asks how mutuality and chosen kinship become tools for mending what empire tears apart."

🔹The Filipino Scholars in the Netherlands (FiSch NL) network, in collaboration with the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS), Leiden University, and the Philippine Embassy in The Netherlands, warmly invites you to Filipino Scholars in the Netherlands and Global Research Futures, a roundtable event celebrating 75 years of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and the Netherlands. This event is co-supported by LeidenGlobal and the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden.

🔹The roundtable brings together Filipino scholars, researchers, institutional actors, and other knowledge partners to highlight the global reach and relevance of Philippine Studies, and to explore possibilities for transregional and transdisciplinary research, collaboration, and knowledge exchange.

🔹 Upcoming Photography Exhibition in Leiden, ‘Upon the Earth: Photographs from Western China’ by Liu Feiyue

🔹 Following his exhibition at IIAS earlier this year, documentary photographer Liu Feiyue presents a new exhibition at Sijthoff in Leiden. ‘Upon the Earth’ brings together photographs from his long-term journeys across Western China, exploring people, landscapes, everyday life, and the changing relationship between communities and their environments.

🔹 This exhibition is curated by Cha-Hsuan Liu (IIAS Affiliated Fellow) and Yajuan Zhang (IIAS Research Fellow)

🔹Join our next guest lecture ‘Humanistic Social Practice - Developing People, Developing Society: The Inner Development Goals for Human Resource Development in Japan’

🔹About the lecture: Human growth is a deeply compelling subject of inquiry. As individuals develop, they become increasingly capable of making meaningful contributions to society, and the same principle holds true within organizations: as employees grow, the organization's capacity to contribute to society expands accordingly.

🔹Professor Hiroshi Nakamura is a professor in the School of Management at SANNO University. Since 2001, he has developed and implemented human resource development systems and training programs for Japanese companies and local governments, covering leadership, management, communication, career development, and human assessment. He currently supports human resource development initiatives for Japanese companies while teaching undergraduate and graduate students at SANNO University.

🔸 Dr. Dawa Lokyitsang (IIAS Research Fellow 2025-2026), has published a new chapter in the Oxford Handbook of the Himalayas, “Decolonizing ‘Tibetan’ and ‘Himalayan’ Studies: Empire, Ethnicity, and Rethinking Sovereignty.”

🔸 This chapter examines how imperial encounters, colonial knowledge production, and scholarly frameworks have shaped the study of Tibet and the Himalayas. Tracing the field’s development from early Western Tibetan Studies to contemporary knowledge formation, the chapter shows how Tibet’s political sovereignty has been marginalized in both academic and political contexts. It further examines how the epistemic and political logics of Western Tibetan Studies have been appropriated, transformed, and redeployed within Chinese state-funded Tibetan Studies, offering a critical intervention into the intersections of empire, ethnicity, sovereignty, and knowledge production in the Himalayan region.
