Morgen en vrijdag zal ter nagedachtenis aan professor Glen Newey een workshop gehouden worden over zijn veld van expertise, politieke filosofie. Het thema van de workshop is "Toleration, political realism and the public role of philosophy" en er zullen verschillende sprekers zijn, zowel van het Instituut als daarbuiten. Iedereen is welkom! Op 19 juni zal niemand minder dan Peter Singer een lezing geven in het Wijnhaven gebouw in Den Haag. Hij zal een lezing houden getiteld "Global Ethics: A Utilitarian Approach". "Utilitarianism is the view that we ought to do what will have the best consequences for all affected by our acts, where "best consequences" is understood as meaning the greatest surplus of happiness over suffering. In a world in which there are more than a billion affluent people and approximately 800 million living in extreme poverty, utilitarianism implies: (1) the affluent ought to use a substantial part of their resources to improve the lives of people in extreme poverty; and (2) the affluent ought to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions so as to reduce the risk of causing harm to others." Douglas MacLean geeft vanmiddag om een lezing getiteld "Climate Change Ethics: Complicity and Accountability". Zijn abstract luidt: "Climate change is a unique ethical problem. The individual actions of virtually everyone in the world contributes to climate change, which might cause great harm, especially in the future. In this sense, we are all complicit. In most cases, if one is complicit in causing a harm, then one can be held accountable: one deserves blame or punishment; one is legitimately a subject of reactive attitudes; or owes compensation. I argue that individuals are not accountable in these senses for their complicity in causing climate change. Rather, our moral accountability flows directly to our political and collective responsibility. A typical (morally decent) person living in a developed, carbon-based society, has no moral obligation to change the way they live; but we all have strong moral duties to pressure our governments (and large corporations and institutions) to enact effective policies to strongly limit carbon emissions." Morgenavond in Wijnhaven Den Haag een lezing over klokkenluiders door Eric Boot!

Huis voor Klokkenluiders

Op 1 juli 2016 werd in Nederland het Huis voor Klokkenluiders opgericht en in de wet verankerd. Het instituut biedt rechtsbescherming aan mensen die misstanden willen melden in de werkomgeving. Het initiatief kon aan het begin op enthousiasme rekenen. Je opwerpen als klokkenluider is immers een uiterst riskante onderneming. Ten eerste kan je promotie vaak vergeten en in het ergste geval leidt het tot ontslag of zelfs strafrechtelijke vervolging. Zodoende werd naar Engels voorbeeld een Huis voor Klokkenluiders opgericht. Maar al snel stapelden de problemen zich op. Zo kon er onder meer geen anonieme melding worden gedaan, de klokkenluider mocht niet de publiciteit opzoeken en er is geen financiële vergoeding voor opgelopen schade. Daarnaast biedt het Huis geen oplossing voor de meest bekende en controversiële klokkenluidersproblematiek: het openbaar maken van geheime overheidsinformatie. Postdoctoraal onderzoeker van het Instituut voor Wijsbegeerte Universiteit Leiden, Eric Boot, zal zich morgenavond buigen over de vraag hoe de wet moet omgaan met klokkenluiders.

De lezing van Eric Boot zal woensdagavond 9 mei plaatsvinden in het nieuwe Wijnhavengebouw in Den Haag. De avond gaat 19:30 van start en duurt tot 21:00. U kunt de lezing gratis bijwonen!
