Twee weken geleden waren we te vinden op het Gezond Festival in Leiden! 👶🔬

Bij onze stand konden bezoekers alles vragen over onderzoek met baby's. Want wist jij dat baby's ons ontzettend veel kunnen leren over taal, hersenen en ontwikkeling?

We hebben genoten van alle nieuwsgierige gezichten - groot én klein. Hopelijk tot de volgende keer! 🎉

Begrijpen baby's van 9 maanden dat een hand iets wil pakken, ook als die hand gewoon recht op een object afkomt?

Niet vanzelfsprekend, blijkt. Alleen wanneer er een tweede object aanwezig was (een zichtbare keuze) vormden baby's een verwachting over de toekomstige actie. Een directe beweging zonder context is voor jonge zuigelingen inherent ambigu, ook als ze weten dat een hand van richting kan veranderen.

De bevindingen nuanceren de teleologische houding-theorie en benadrukken het belang van rijke, contextuele input voor vroege doelattributie en sociaal leren.

Do 9-month-old babies understand that a hand is about to grasp something, even if that hand is simply moving straight towards an object?

It turns out this is not a given. Only when a second object was present (a visible choice) did babies form an expectation about the future action. A direct movement without context is inherently ambiguous for young infants, even if they know that a hand can change direction.

The findings qualify the teleological stance theory and emphasise the importance of rich, contextual input for early goal attribution and social learning.

🔬 Jonge wetenschappers op bezoek!

Recentelijk verwelkomden we een groep BSO-kinderen van Partou kinderopvang in ons babylab. Ze kregen een les over taalontwikkeling, maakten een rondleiding door het fNIRS- en EEG-lab en mochten aan het einde een VR-bril uitproberen.

Het was geweldig om te zien hoe nieuwsgierig ze waren. Vragen over hersengolven, verwondering over de apparatuur en volop enthousiasme. Precies de energie die wetenschap nodig heeft.

Wetenschap begint met nieuwsgierigheid, en die hadden ze volop.

🔬 Young scientists visit!

We recently welcomed a group of after-school care children from Partou kinderopvang to our babylab. They learned about language development, took a tour of the fNIRS and EEG labs, and got to try on a VR headset at the end.

It was wonderful to see how curious they were. Questions about brain waves, amazement at the equipment, and plenty of enthusiasm. Exactly the kind of energy science needs.

Science starts with curiosity, and they certainly had that.

🐦🍼Wat hebben baby's en vogels gemeen? Meer dan je denkt!

Claartje Levelt en Sita ter Haar 🟥 gaven een inspirerend symposium voor Studievereniging Emile. Ze namen de studenten mee in de fascinerende wereld van taalontwikkeling. Van de eerste klanken van een baby tot de zang van vogels.

Jonge vogels leren hun zang op een manier die opvallend veel lijkt op hoe baby's taal verwerven. Ze luisteren, imiteren en verfijnen. Steeds opnieuw, totdat het klopt. Die parallel laat zien hoe dit leerproces werkt en hoe wetenschappelijk onderzoek ons helpt dit beter te begrijpen.

🔍 Mijn eerste taalonderzoek

"Baby Anna is pas 19 weken oud en draagt nu al bij aan wetenschappelijk onderzoek, al zal ze zich daar nog niet erg bewust van zijn."

Enige tijd geleden kwam het tijdschrift Leidraad bij ons Babylab langs om een kijkje te nemen. Dit heeft geleid tot een publicatie van dit interessante artikel over taalonderzoek bij baby’s.

Illuminating Infant Brain Development: How fNIRS Is Powering New Discoveries

Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a non-invasive optical imaging technique that detects changes in blood oxygenation linked to neural activity. This technology allows researchers to study cortical processing and development in a comfortable and non-medical setting.

Thanks to a recent COIN grant awarded to Prof. Claartje Levelt and Dr. Szilvia Biro, Babylab Leiden has significantly upgraded its existing fNIRS infrastructure. One of our current studies explores how infants process socially relevant information—such as distinguishing biological and non-biological motion. With our upgraded fNIRS system, we can now investigate whether this ability is driven by specific regions like the superior temporal sulcus or involves a broader cortical network. We are also examining how social and linguistic contexts influence this activation.
