So cool to see aquaponics happening around the world!

We are so excited to have received and installed the second half of the double-cantilever Aquaponics Grow Tower!!! This shows the second half blue base being installed, as well as the four levels of orange cantilever arms being installed. Then each level has the steel grow troughs installed and then the wire floor for each level. Now we are ready to put the pond liners in, connect all the plumbing, connect the air lines, the pumps, do a water test and then we get our Tilapia!!! We are so close we can literally taste the produce and the fish coming out of our new Aquaponics Vertical Grow System! It's been a long time coming, but we are almost there!!! Thank you all for your support, encouragement, patronage and kind words...we couldn't be here without your support...MUCHAS GRACIAS!!!

Doordat restaurants niet meer afnemen en onze sla gewoon doorgroeit, hebben we inmiddels voldoende sla. En het houdt niet op.

We willen deze sla nu voor een speciaal aangepaste prijs aanbieden. We hebben de sla al geplukt, gewassen en ingepakt. Alles volgens de strengste hygienische regels.

Zo kunnen jullie genieten van de lekkerste sla van Eindhoven (vraag het onze klanten maar) en hebben wij nog een beetje inkomsten.

Onze slamix is verpakt in zakjes van 150 of 200 gram en is minstens vijf dagen houdbaar in de koelkast. We vragen er respectievelijk € 1,50 en € 2,- voor.

Because restaurants no longer order and our lettuce continues to grow, we now have enough lettuce. And it doesn't stop.

We want to offer this lettuce for a specially adapted price. We have already picked, washed and packed the lettuce. Everything according to the strictest hygienic rules.

This way you can enjoy the best lettuce in Eindhoven (just ask our customers) and we still have a little income.

Our salad mix is ​​packed in bags of 150 or 200 grams and can be stored in the refrigerator for at least five days. We charge € 1.50 and € 2.00 respectively.

It was February 2015: filled with dedication, passion, enthusiasm and belief I founded my very first company: Riverfood – producing fresh fish and vegetables inside buildings using aquaponics.
The developments that followed were numerous: writing a business plan, designing a logo, gathering a team, participating in (network) events, designing a website, completing accelerator programs, participating in (and winning some) competitions, developing products, securing finance, finding a suitable location, building aquaponics systems, teaching, giving presentations, growing a variety of plants, raising a number of fish species, collaborating with education, training interns and much, much more…
After winning the ‘Start-Up Academy’ in 2017 Riverfood took home at PLNT Leiden.
The beginning of 2018 was awesome! The team grew to five enthusiasts, Riverfood expanded from the basement combined with a mere desk to basement and office, multiple systems were sold, many courses were taught, lesson materials were bought and two market-worthy modular aquaponics systems were designed.
Sadly the anticipated crowdfund for the modular systems halfway 2018 never saw the light of day as arrangements with external parties did not go as planned. As a result the final quarter of 2018 showed finances were becoming insufficient to maintain Riverfood in its current form. The team had to be reduced back to just me and the office had to go.
Determined to make Riverfood grow again I took an additional job to create financial space while working hard on the Aquaponics Academy, Riverfood Systems and Riverfood Farming. Clearly this is not a one-person job.
After solving (also financially) some technical problems at client systems I chose to focus on the expansion of one branch only: Riverfood Farming.
While new interns joined Riverfood and we were optimizing the space in the PLNT Leiden basement for food production calculations showed Riverfood would not become viable… The only conclusion to draw was: “this is currently an expensive hobby, not a commercial business…”
Last October 2019 I made the sad decision to stop Riverfood.
Although Riverfood has not become what I anticipated there have been many wonderful moments, interesting developments and beautiful successes. These have all been made possible by the enthusiasm, inspiration and support of many, including you!
This way I would like to thank you very much for your contribution to Riverfood!
My next steps are not clear yet. Naturally Riverfood has enriched my experiences and knowledge and I am positive I will put these to practice in the (near) future.

Een aquaponics systeem gebruikt 90% minder water dan het tuinieren in de volle grond. Dit komt omdat het water wordt gecirculeerd. Alleen het water dat wordt geabsorbeerd of dat verdampt moet worden bijgevuld. Dit kan bijvoorbeeld uitstekend met opgevangen regenwater!

After the summerbreak filled with sunshine, relaxation and reflection we are back to work and come with a new range of workshops. We hope to see you soon to get inspired to start your own aquaponics, to composte your organic waste with worms, to grow your own microgreens or to learn how to make your own fish food!

Last January Riverfood joined the MOR project as partner to integrate aquaponics in their work-living spaces. It was incredible to see the sustainable ideas of these students become reality, first in Delft at the "Green Village" and next in Szentendre - Hungary. The MOR team buzzed with energy, hard work and commitment which resulted in many prizes and an overall European 2nd prize! Riverfood can't wait to see aquaponics become a standard integration in renovation and newly constructed buildings! at is

At July 3 2019 Polariks visited Riverfood to test their indoor farming sensors. It was really awesome to see the photosynthesis of our plants happening real-time! We see great potential in linking these sensors to our indoor systems: it will show when your plants are happy and photosynthesizing optimally, next you can link your grow lights to not provide more energy than the plants need! Last Wednesday Riverfood attended a breakfast meeting organised by the Canadian delegation of the state New Brunswick. The meeting was held at the RAI in Amsterdam, just below the GreenTech Expo 2019. After a good breakfast and presentations about the opportunities that still lie in New Brunswick, we got the chance to network with other companies, some of them Dutch like us, of course the Canadian companies and companies who already made the step to Canada. After some very interesting conversations we got invited to attend the GreenTech Expo 2019. Happily we went to check out the GreenTech Expo and saw some very cool things. From Dutch companies as well as companies from all over the world. All in all we had fun and learned a lot - a good day for Riverfood!

Last couple of weeks, Riverfood had four TU Delft students visit our office to work on a new aquaponics systeem. This system is part of a whole sustainability project with which they will compete in the Solar Decathlon in Hungary in July. At Riverfood we are very content with the results and look of the new system. We wish the students the best of luck in Hungary! Riverfood aims to inspire as many people as possible to start with aquaponics. February 7, 2019 Riverfood had the opportunity to enthusiasmize a group of secondary school teachers about aquaponics in the class during the 12th national NLT (Nature - Life and Technology) Conference. After going through the aquaponics cycle and some additional aquaponics theory the teacher split in separate groups to review the lesson materials, watch the Riverfood aquaponics animations, discuss practial and project possibilities when working with aquaponics and measure water quality. Riverfood thoroughly enjoyed working with the enthusiastic group of teachers and from the feedback Riverfood received afterwards the experience was mutually positive.

Throwback! With the start of the new school year in September 2018, the Steenspil school, located in Halsteren - Noord Brabant - the Netherlands, contacted Riverfood. They wanted to showcase possible green job opportunities in their ‘inspirational’ greenhouse to stimulate students to pursue a career in one of the work branches - teachers agreed aquaponics had to be included for sure. After some meetings Riverfood got the go-ahead to start building a 4 meter long aquaponics system showing as many plant-growing methods as possible.
February 5th 2019 Riverfood finished the small details and had the pleasure to teach the teachers and a first group of students about the system after which the students released the first fishes in the system and planted the first microgreens.
We hope the Steenspil school will be able to inspire many students to start their own aquaponics!

In an aquaponics system your fish are captive animals. At Riverfood we feel it is important to make them feel at home: provide water plants in their surrounding, hiding places and give them enough swimming area. Make them a nice home!

Aquaponics is een duurzame methode om vis en groenten te kweken. Het is populair bij individuen, ondernemers, opvoeders, missies en overheden. Bovendien groei je met dit type binnenkweek aanzienlijk meer voedsel met minder water, land en arbeid dan traditionele landbouw.

Wat is aquaponics? ... een veerkrachtig landbouwsysteem dat welzijn en betere voeding biedt.

Aquaponics is een vorm van landbouw die het kweken van vis in tanks (recirculerende aquacultuur) combineert met een grondloze plantencultuur (hydrocultuur). In aquaponics biedt het voedingsrijke water van het kweken van vis een natuurlijke meststof voor de planten en de planten helpen om het water voor de vis te zuiveren.

Aquaponics kan worden gebruikt om op een duurzame manier verse vis en groenten voor een gezin groot te brengen, een dorp te voeden of winst te maken in een commerciële landbouwonderneming, het hele jaar door, in elk klimaat.

Aquaponics is een geweldig voorbeeld van het hele jaar door indoor kweken. Het kan overal worden gedaan, het verstrekken van verse lokale voedsel dat vrij is van pesticiden, herbiciden en kunstmest. Het is veilig, gemakkelijk en vers!

Riverfood biedt workshops aan waarin in 4 uur tijd wordt uitgelegd over en gewerkt met aquaponics. Er wordt in 2 uur alles aan theorie uitgelegd over aquaponics en de overige 2 uur wordt er gewerkt aan een daadwerkelijk aquaponics systeem!
