As the European Commission recasts the rules around end-of-life vehicles (ELVs), what could this mean for leather — and where are the opportunities for the industry?

In this Q&A, Karl Flowers, Managing Director at Authenticae and Technical Author & Contributor for ILM and Leather Naturally, explores the role leather could play in a more circular automotive industry.

From durability and repairability to traceability, design-for-dismantling and biocircularity, Karl looks at how closer collaboration between OEMs, leather suppliers and recyclers could help unlock new solutions.

He also highlights an important challenge for the industry: communicating leather's future potential through credible science, innovation and fresh narratives that resonate with the next generation of consumers and designers.

As Karl puts it: “Biocircularity presents many new options. We should grab, use and celebrate them!”

The decision to keep the Walsall Leather Museum in the UK, in its historic home is more than a local heritage victory. It is a powerful reminder that the future of leather depends not only on innovation and technology, but also on protecting the stories, skills, and places that built the industry.

This month, the local council confirmed that the museum would not be relocated from its historic site following a decision by the authority’s new cabinet. The move reflects the strength of public support, industry concern, and recognition that the museum’s value extends far beyond the objects displayed inside.

We caught up with leather designer, Lauren Broxton who has been campaigning to keep the Walsall Leather Museum open in its current location. Read her interview here on what this victory means for her, the local community and the leather sector in general: https://www.leathernaturally.org/news-events/news/walsall-leather-museum-an-interview-with-lauren-broxton/

We know that leather played a central role in ancient Greek materials and Mike Redwood has written a fascinating article about the history of leather for International Leather Maker here 👉 https://internationalleathermaker.com/the-odyssey-of-leather/

The ancient to modern story of leather is a gift that keeps on giving and there are some wonderful museums and institutions that tell this story well across the world. If your interest has been piqued - here’s five of our favourite leather museums to explore on your travels.

➡️ German Leather Museum. Over 100 years of the museum’s existence, the institution has developed into an all-round showcase of leather design. Its 30,000 collection documents and presents craftsmanship and artistic creativity across a period of six millennia.

➡️ Ubrique Leather Museum, Spain. Housed in the beautiful Convento de Capuchinos, visitors will find examples of the presses and cutting machines used since the 19th century. Ubrique leather products are renowned worldwide and commissioned by fashion houses, Gucci and Louis Vuitton.

➡️ Tandy Leather, Texas, USA. Located in Fort Worth, Texas, the museum showcases historic hand-tooled leather art, works by leathercraft pioneers Al and Ann Stohlman and unique items like the world's longest belt.

➡️ Igualada Leather Museum, Spain. Located in a historic tannery and planning to re-open this Autumn after refurbishment, the museum explores Spain’s leather industry from leather tanning to its industrial heritage.

➡️ Walsall Leather Museum. Currently closed but rumoured to re-open again soon, this museum celebrates centuries old saddle and leathercraft with working machinery and artisan workshops.
