“The Abramelin Ritual as Daimonic Practice”
Abstract: This blog article explores the Abramelin ritual through Antoine Faivre’s four characteristics of Western esotericism. It argues that the ritual is best understood as a form of daimonic practice centered on establishing contact with the Holy Guardian Angel, a being that guides the practitioner’s moral and spiritual transformation. Drawing on historical sources, contemporary accounts, and examples from both philosophy and popular culture, the article shows why the Abramelin ritual remains one of the most influential traditions in Western esotericism.
Terje Sparby is currently a professor of philosophy and research director at Steiner University College in Oslo. His areas of research include German idealism, meditation, and first-person methods. He studied philosophy at the University of Oslo and received his PhD in philosophy at Heidelberg University in 2012. The topic was Hegel’s conception of the determinate negation. Terje has been a postdoc at the Humboldt University and the Bender Institute of Neuroimaging, and a visiting scholar at the Mind & Life Institute in the US. He did his habilitation at the Witten/Herdecke University in Germany, before returning to Norway.

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Aaron French is now the Co-Editor-in-Chief of RENSEP’s journal “Praxis-Knowledge”. Aaron has already been actively involved at RENSEP, overseeing blog submissions, as well as editing and proof-reading research articles in “Praxis-Knowledge”.
“Dr. Aaron J. French is a historian of global intellectual history and the history of knowledge, exploring how religious, scientific, and philosophical ideas have traveled across cultures and contributed to the formation of modern identities, institutions, and worldviews. He received his Ph.D. in the Study of Religion, with a Designated Emphasis in Science and Technology Studies, from the University of California, Davis, in 2021. Through a comparative analysis of the thought of Max Weber and Rudolf Steiner, his dissertation challenged the conventional definition of modernity as the triumph of rational thinking over magical, mystical, and esoteric traditions. The thesis demonstrated that these traditions were not outmoded remnants of a premodern worldview but active forces in shaping modern philosophy, science, politics, psychology, and art. This research culminated in my published monograph, Max Weber, Rudolf Steiner, and Modern Western Esotericism: A Transcultural Approach (Routledge 2025).”
