A Hannie Schaft Walking Tour
Join us for a powerful new walking tour dedicated to Jannetje Johanna “Hannie” Schaft — one of the most iconic figures of the Dutch resistance during WWII – on September 20th.
Occasion: Hannie’s birthday was on September 16th. On that day there will be a special evening program organized by the Cultuurkoepel. This walking tour on September 20th will expand the experience of following in Hannie’s footsteps.
The tour begins at the Hannie statue in Kenaupark, where her legacy is brought to life through storytelling by Sophie Poldermans, who will share intimate insights into Hannie’s resistance acts, as well as those of Hannie’s partners in the resistance Truus and Freddie Oversteegen. Sophie is the bestselling author of Seducing and Killing N***s. Hannie, Truus and Freddie: Dutch Resistance Heroines of WWII (USA 2019) and Desnoods met Wapens (NL 2023), both based on years of interviews with Truus and Freddie, who survived the war. Signed copies of Poldermans’ books will be available for purchase during the tour.
Alongside Poldermans’ personal storytelling, historian Oana Stan — who runs education programs and walking tours dedicated to increasing the visibility of women in history — will provide wider context on what life was like in Haarlem during the N**i occupation, grounding Hannie’s story in the reality of the city and its people during the war.
