ased theater forms. Ultimately, students learn to identify what in particular constitutes a theater production in order to critically analyze contemporary performances. In order to highlight the richness of theater traditions, theater studies in Groningen offer insight into a number of perspectives and research methods. We analyze dozens of dramaturgical texts through close-readings and hermeneutical analyses. Additionally, we have pre- and post- discussions with theater makers relating to subjects taken from relevant frameworks, including those of semiotics, gender studies, sociology, performance studies, and more. In individual research and in group projects, students focus upon the creation and perception of theater; on the goals and intentions of theater-makers; and upon the public’s actual experiences and interpretations.
