Our Marie Skłodowska-Curie member Uroš Kovač has written a new article on his research about sprituality and religion among African football players, in light of the currently ongoing Africa Cup.

Uroš' project at the CRCG investigates the intersection of football, migration, and religion among African migrants in Europe in order to study African migrants who hope to sign contracts with European football clubs. In this short piece, he argues that the magico-religious practices that sometimes take place in African football can be considered as not simply peculiarities of African football, but rather reflections on global dynamics and structural inequities.

The ‘magic’ of the beautiful game African football is often maligned as steeped in superstition. But rather than endemic to the continent, debates about football 'sorcery' reflect global dynamics.

On Thursday November 2nd, the Centre for Religion, Conflict and Globalisation is organizing a roundtable event together with the Research Unit Education and Culture.

Institutions for higher education are increasingly called to reflect on and take action to challenge and overcome injustice, violence and exclusion. Awareness of how institutions themselves are structured by gendered and racial inequalities, call to question educational cultures as well as the production of knowledge within these institutions. This Roundtable aims to engage with these critical conversations, while considering the role of research in challenging injustice, violence and exclusion in higher education. Related to this we will explore the ethical and methodological challenges experienced by researchers and teachers when challenging their own universities.

Dr. Elisabet Le Roux, Research Director of the Unit for Religion and Development Research at Stellenbosch University will discuss her research on campus r**e culture at Stellenbosch University, South Africa.
Drs. Charlotte Wekker, senior lecturer at the Hanze University of Applied Sciences and a PhD researcher at the University of Groningen, will share critical insights on researching and addressing racism in higher education in The Netherlands.

Prof. Dr. Lehmann is emeritus professor from the University of Cambridge, and is both sociologist and anthropologist.

He will be visiting the university on the 9th of May, and the Centre for Religion, Conflict and Globalization will be hosting a presentation on his work. It start at 16:00 in room 117 of the faculty. It can also be followed online, through meet.google.com/ciy-ygqj-mva.

Dr. Lehmanns talk will discuss the globalization of Brazilian Neo-Pentecostalism featuring the findings of fieldwork conducted in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Israel, Mexico, the UK, and the US.

On the 10th of March, we are organizing a public symposium about gender, religion and secularity on behalf of International Women's Day!
During this event, we host the perspectives of three scholars on European gender movements. They will explore a variety of topics: research on anti-gender movements, women in polygamous marriages and on religious activists for gender equality.

The event will take place in person, in the courtroom of the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies (Oude Boteringestraat 38) from 9:30-13:00 (walk-in 9:15). A lunch and coffee breaks will be provided.
