On the 7th of May, Gretchen Head is coming to Flanor and Siduri to give a lecture! Gretchen is professor at the RUG, specializing in narrative from the early modern to modern periods (14th-21st centuries). She will tell us about Salman Rushdie’s The Satanic Verses in relation to Khomeini, the Fatwa, and the general possibility of questioning Islam in the literary text. As some of you may have heard, we have been very busy getting some major documents in order, like the Internal Regulations and the multi-year plan. Op 19 mei hebben we een aardig onverwachtse Algemene Leden Vergadering. Zoals sommigen gehoord hebben, zijn we druk bezig met het in orde krijgen van een aantal documenten, zoals het Huishoudelijk Reglement en het meerjarenplan. Op deze extra ALV zullen we stemmen over het wel of niet accepteren van deze documenten.

A social group that focuses on… studying?

Yes! And it even goes beyond that, because instead of studying, you can also work on small other tasks, such as writing an application letter, organizing your notes or finally answering the emails you’ve strategically ignored. Studieboeken is thé place to get the stuff done that you’ve been procrastinating for weeks! Basically, the idea of Studieboeken is that if you place a small group of Flanorians in a small room, they will suddenly become very motivated and motivate each other to be focused for a few hours.

And it works! Research by Flanor et al. (2026) shows that those participating in Studieboeken have, on average, a 37% increased chance of passing their exams, while improving their average life satisfaction with 24%. Because, beyond just studying, the group also takes (long!) lunch and coffee breaks; there’s plenty of room for fun between the study sessions. But not too much fun: the group has learned from the Douwe Egberts Incident, where they just talked the whole time, rather than studying. Nowadays, they either use the Pomodoro strategy, another timer or a fixed focus time to make sure actual studying happens.

Often, the group manages to book a separate study room, so no need to sit in overly crowded study rooms somewhere in the city centre, or to be at the UB at 7:30 to secure a spot. The group is really flexible, too, so every member can just initiate study sessions, and while most sessions are in the exam period, there are meetups in regular weeks, too!
