Please join us on Tuesday 23 April at 16.00 for our next Research Seminar when Dr Manuela Ritondale (University of Groningen) will present her lecture on the Digital turn in (underwater) cultural heritage. An exemplary context to discuss the utility, challenges and ethics of digital and virtual applications. This will take place in the Poststraat 6 collegezaal and online: https://meet.google.com/czv-nvhk-tvt
Abstract:
The 2001 UNESCO Convention for the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage has provided a shared legally binding framework for the participatory States aimed at optimizing identification, research and protection of their underwater heritage while ensuring its preservation and sustainability. Some of the main principles that the Convention has established, such as in situ preservation as the first option, preference for non-destructive techniques, and promotion of public access to in situ underwater cultural heritage, have had a profound impact on underwater archaeology practice and management.
Partially based on the outcomes of my PhD project concluded in 2022, and on my current postdoctoral research, this talk will critically discuss whether and how digital and virtual applications have contributed to addressing the above UNESCO principles, with what advantages and limitations. Do these technologies help promote understanding and accessibility of underwater sites? Why have certain applications, such as 3D visualization, been more popular thus far than others, like predictive assessment? Are virtual technologies really improving the accessibility of unreachable sites, or are we simply generating new excluded categories of users? What do we risk losing on the altar of technological innovation?
