Dear friends, please read carefully:

I refuse to use this page as a vehicle for perpetuating any political agenda, yet the war in Ukraine is not simply a political issue - it first and foremost is a humanitarian catastrophe.

Allow me to speak from the heart: I am not only afraid for the few Ukrainian friends and loved ones I count in my personal life, but the entire civilian population of Ukraine as such. And for as much as it might sting to hear the following: Changing our profile pictures to feature the Ukrainian flag may be a nice little gesture of our solidarity, but in the real world that alone achieves exactly nothing.

So I am asking you to help me share the information below - the foundation "Ukrainians in the Netherlands" are currently collecting donations which will, for example, be used to provide medical supplies for the wounded or to support those bereaved of lost ones or losing their hearth and home. More information below.

I cannot stress enough that there is a huge difference between the mere symbolic support of the Ukrainian population, and actually doing something which brings about an actual change. No matter how small that change may be. Picture this: The Netherlands alone count almost 18 million inhabitants - if every single one of us would donate just EUR 1,- we could raise almost 18 million Euros in a collective effort. If not much more.

Please consider sharing and donating (financially or by directly donating medical supplies). Let's get busy and do our part, no matter how small. Thank you.

At your request, we are opening a fundraiser to help Ukraine. The received donations will be used to meet the needs of the military: rehabilitate wounded soldiers, support the families of the dead, and support the children who were forced to flee from the occupied territories.
Also yesterday, two more of our servicemen from Ukraine arrived in the Netherlands for rehabilitation, who need our support.

✅ Stichting Oekraïners in Nederland

We zullen op de diasporapagina informeren en rapporteren over verdere acties.

Allemaal alvast bedankt!

Happy holidays to all of you. Enjoy the time with your loved ones - or the solitude out in the woods in case you are one of those hiding from christmassy family drama. ;-)

Another status update:
So a lot of stuff has happened lately. Repeatedly had to go to the hospital due to several complications with the leg. A little while ago I had some issues with the onset of compartment syndrome, yet luckily managed to prevent permanent nerve damage to the lower leg.

After that I had some severe issues with a blood clot. Long story, but that almost resulted in a fatality and I barely managed to dodge the Reaper here.

And as if that was not enough, so far the outlook remains pretty grim: According to the medical staff, it might very well be that future approaches physiotherapy and rehabilitation could fail. In other words: I might try my best for a couple of months and still face at least further surgery, if not an amputation after all. All I can do for now is let those docs have their opinions and stay stubborn.

I got to be honest though: In terms of psychology, I never experienced such an ordeal. Compared to the myriad moments when I got lost on a trail or had to deal with the elements, hypothermia, food poisoning, etc., this is different. You can tackle almost every problem head on if you got your mobility and the capacity to act - being bound to a bed for almost two months with no possibility to even take a single step on the stairs really messes with your psyche.

For as weird as it sounds: I hope that at some point in the future, this will pay off in the way that it reinforces patience, persistence and willpower. Still it is weird: We go off-grid in search of extreme and life-changing experiences and in the end, they happen in between four familiar walls closing in further and further every day.

That said: A big thanks to you for all your kind words. And a special thanks to Foxscout Survival, the DDFM crew and Emma for all of your support, I would not want to know how things would be without you.

Anyway - it might take a long time until I am back in business with this bushcraft-related project. For that I am sorry and I hope to see you folks stick around until better days come.

Thank you!

Important notice:
As some of you already know, I had quite a bunch of setbacks lately, forcing me to deal with them before doing any activity related to Rathwulven Bushcraft.

As far as problems seldomly come on their own, I also had a rather bad motorcycle accident last saturday. Long story short: A car driver cut me off, neglecting the right of way and hit me in the right side. As a result, my foot got stuck in between the bike's frame and the kickstarter, pulling my right leg into the opposite direction of where my torso was going. As a result I am now dealing with several injuries: I hit a parked car with my head, had some ribs messed up and had the bones of my ankle joint broken several times.

I am somewhat happy that I am still alive, yet I have to face reconstructive surgery now and, at this point in time, can only hope for the best. Honestly spoken I am quite troubled by the idea that there is a decent risk of facing further complications which could cause permanent immobility of my foot. Stuff like that would take away most of the things I am truly passionate about: Riding, hiking, traveling long distances... But yeah, let's not paint things black.

All I can say is that I hope for your understanding as I will have to focus on my recovery during the upcoming weeks and months. I'll push through this mess and would love to see you stick around until better days will come. As Arnold said: I'll be back.

To my riding brothers and sisters: Please stay safe out there, I wish you lots of accident-free seasons to come.

To all other adventurers: Enjoy every moment of every adventure to the fullest. You never really know if it might be your last.

Cheers & all the best
Ralf
