LACK • 'lack' is a B1-level word that appears as a verb (to lack) and a singular uncountable noun. It has to do with something not being there, or being deficient in something.

For example, when using it as a verb, you could say something like:
"He lacks the experience needed for the job." or
"The proposal lacked clarity and structure."

When used as a noun, the word is usually collocated with the preposition "of":
"They were suffering from a lack of experience." or
"There was no lack of funding."

Want to learn a new language in 2026? Here are three apps worth considering: Duolingo, Promova, and Lingo Llama.

Boost your language learning in 2026 with one of these apps.
First, there's Duolingo. It does the job, but it's under scrutiny because they are using AI to make assignments after having laid off most of their staff. Bad move.

Then, there's Promova, which is also quite nice because it offers a completely different experience, isn't as expensive, and isn't trying to force features or a streak on you. They also use real-world content to teach you vocabulary and chunks.

Finally, if you're learning Spanish, check out Lingo Llama. They're new on the block but are worth checking out. It shows you words and phrases in context and takes them from real-world content from television and YouTube. They use research-based immersion tricks to make sure you really remember the words.

Let me know: what's your favourite language learning app?

If you're looking for books for your 2026 reading list, halt your search! I reviewed the books I read this year to recommend. Turns out: there are six books you should put on that list, and two you should not even consider (and one of them is written by a very popular author). Read my verdict using the link in my bio!

🤔 What's the best book you read this year? Let me know!

To pay homage (v.) • A C1 verb that captures the essence of honouring someone who has made a significant impact on our lives or society.

Imagine a crowd gathered at a monument, hearts swelling with gratitude and shared memories, as they publicly celebrate a legacy that inspires generations.

It's not just a word; it's an emotion, a collective heartbeat of admiration and respect that unites us all.

REUSABLE (adj.) - When something can be used more than once, we can use the adjective 'reusable'. Think of reusable plastic or reusable shopping bags.

This B1-level adjective is useful to have in your vocabulary when talking about the environment or sustainability (which is in itself a difficult noun).

What do you have that's reusable?

How does vocabulary work in your brain? How can you make sure you remember the words you've studied? In my latest article, I cover vocabulary and the brain and explore ways to enhance the way you learn vocabulary.

What does brain science teach us about learning vocabulary, so we can remember all those words?
