GEmeenschap van Wiskunde en Informatica Studenten - GEWIS

Like previous years, the GEWIS committee GEHACK organized the Eindhoven Algorithm Programming Contest. This year over 100 students competed to win the title of best algorithmic programming team in Eindhoven. The best teams will advance to the Benelux Algorithm Programming Contest in October, which GEWIS will also organize.

During the past two years, Nicky van den Berg, Wesley Brants, Laura Kuntze, Floris Tulner, Niekie van Uum, and Niels Verheyden, have been working on an alumni network. They are proud to announce that alumni network Ada Alumni is now officially established! Ada Lovelace was the first female mathematician who was a computer programmer as well. Ada Alumni aims to keep alumni connected after their studies at our department, by offering an online platform and by organizing reunion activities.

We proudly present our newest honorary member Frans Goossens! During his time as receptionist he meant a lot to our association. Checking in with members, assisting the board and keeping an eye out for GEWIS have greatly contributed. Thank you again for everything.

Throughout this academic year GEWIS hosted multiple Parent Days. Making up for the Parent Days that couldn't take place during COVID, many happened this year. During the Parent Days, parents got to experience their child's university life for a day! Our students, together with their parents, visited a lecture, an instruction session, a tour around campus and a borrel at GEWIS. Hopefully, parents now have a better idea what their child is doing at the university 😉

As a Study Association it is important to check in with our faculty members and give students the opportunity to discuss their education. During the education debate we made this possible! Students and teachers got to go head to head to discuss some of the toughest dilemmas in education. Staff from our department and university were invited to watch the debate unfold.

As part of our eight lustrum, the lustrum committee organized a hackathon. Teams of two to six students solved problems while working with real-life data from Wolfpack. The day was a great success with excellent solutions. Congratulations to the winning teams!

The best teachers of the year as voted upon by Computer Science and Mathematics students of the TU/e are Bart Jansen and Jim Portegies respectively. During the employee drink hosted by GEWIS, our Educational Officer Anne awarded them with a charter expressing our gratitude. Congratulations to you both!

A while back we organized a mathematics competition! Together with Da Vinci Derivatives, a set of challenging mathematical questions were established which groups of three tackled by using their math skills. Next to the competition, the day also included a lunch and award ceremony.
