Dutch people handing out money? Sounds like a scam — unless it’s November.
At the ‘Beyond the Lecture Halls’ event, organized by and we handed out shiny chocolate coins. Because yes, even the famously frugal Dutch have a moment of generosity each year… which makes you wonder: there must be a deeper reason 👀
Turns out, there is. The tradition comes from Saint Nicholas (aka Sinterklaas), who secretly gave gold to families in need — dropping coins down chimneys, straight into socks. Over time, the real money turned into chocolate, but the idea stuck: a small gift that symbolizes support.
And let’s be real — student life today could still use some of that.
