IDEa Alumni Spotlight ๐
Last Friday, during the biannual Demo Day, Industrial Designโs alumni association debuted a new initiative: the IDEa alumni spotlight. Several students projects got nominated for the award. But Edelweiss Juliea took home the throphy with her Micro Intervention Mart. ๐ฅณ
During this design research project, she explored how Design Fiction and Design Activism can empower Dutch Asians to address experiences of micro aggressions. Although the general definition of micro aggressions remains relatively broad, in this study, racial micro aggressions are defined as everyday comments or actions that can cause harm based on a personโs race and present an opportunity for response. ๐ฌ
While individuals cope with racism in different ways, research has shown that active coping strategies and seeking social support are healthy approaches that positively influence both the mental and physical well-being of people experiencing racism. This project focuses on empowering Dutch Asians who experience micro aggressions by presenting fictional tools to address them, demonstrating how small actions can have a significant impact on an individualโs experience. ๐
We want to congratulate .j once more for her wonderful work and thank for organizing the IDEa Spotlight! ๐

Industrial Design student Jens Vervoort is doing just that! ๐ก
His installation focuses on cleaning staff, but thatโs only part of the story. In his broader masterโs project, Jens explores how design can highlight many overlooked groups who keep the university running every day. ๐งน๐ค
Why? Because recognition matters, and Jens shows how design can create it. ๐
His approach is creative and socially impactful. ๐
His installation on the ground floor of Atlas is gone again, but you can find him on the Industrial Design Demo Day, this Friday December 12th.๐๏ธ

Hi! Iโm Sophia Martens and before the summer I completed my FBP (Final Bachelor Project) within the Health & Inclusive Design squad.๐งโโ๏ธ My project focused on enhancing self-reliance among people with dementia. I collaborated with Het Klooster in Waalre, where I learned that many residents struggle with understanding their daily schedule.๐ Not knowing what comes next often causes stress and increases their dependence on caregivers for reassurance.๐ฐ To address this, I developed Activi, a clock designed to gently guide residents through their day.๐ Activi uses light to indicate the time and clearly displays the current activity taking place in the care home.๐ก Five minutes before any activity starts, it plays a soft, activity-specific sound to help residents anticipate what is coming in a calm and comforting way.๐ With this simple yet effective product, I aim to support residents in becoming more independent while easing the workload and emotional burden on caregivers.๐ช

Master graduation ceremonies ๐ฉโ๐๐จโ๐
Last week, many master students officially received their diplomas! ๐
Throughout the day, various ceremonies took place where students received their diplomas and got a personal speech from their graduation mentor.๐ค To leave their mark on the university, literally, graduates also got to engrave their name in the glass on Alumni Avenue, the walkway from Metaforum to Matrix. โ

Hi!
My name is Jules ๐๐ผโโ
This semester, Iโm studying Collaborative and Industrial Design at Aalto University in Finland as part of my M2.1 exchange. Ever since walking across Aaltoโs exhibitions at DDW, Iโve been curious about studying design there.๐ซ๐ฎ
Being here has taught me many hands-on skills due to the wide range of workshops. The Aalto approach to design, with creativity and critical thinking so intertwined, has taught me a new perspective on design. It had inspired me to try out more multidisciplinary approaches to my design process!๐ท๐ผโโ๏ธ
Outside of class, Iโve been trying new things, from weekend hikes in the forest to enduring the sauna and cold dips in the sea. The culture here is to be very connected with your surroundings, and the balance between nature and daily life is amazing!๐๏ธ
This experience has been both grounding and inspiring, and Iโm really grateful to be learning from such a unique design culture.๐
A look back at Dutch Design Week where Industrial Designโs study association Lucid hosted the Future by Design exhibition at Ketelhuisplein.๐ช
The exhibit showed works of four talented Industrial Design students. Highlighting the range of directions one can take in their development in the program. ๐งญ

2nd place for Kiki Meiland๐ฅ
Last week, during the Manifestations Young Talent award ceremony, Kiki Meiland, an Industrial Design Master student, was awarded second place.๐คฉ Her project, Spread the Bread, was described as an analog Snapchat that builds on the historic relevance of bread in the Dutch resistance during WWII.๐
Congratulations to her for this achievement! ๐
Breathing New Energy ๐ฌ๏ธ
For her Final Bachelor Project in the Crafting Wearable Senses squad Janneke van der Meiden combined textile and technology to design for a sensitive user group: People with Long COVID. A relatively new condition, that affects twice as many women as men. ๐ซ
The garment aims to offer comfort and haptic breathing guidance to help the user regain breath control and recharge energy. It measures both chest and abdominal breathing using resistive stretch sensors. When breathing gets dysfunctional at rest, a guiding vibration pattern integrated into the garment starts to play. By following this pattern, the user is guided back toward a calm abdominal breathing rhythm.๐ง
The project brings awareness to this user group, and aims to inspire other designers and engineers to innovate for the user group.โญ๏ธ
A few weeks ago Janneke also presented the project at the UbiComp/ISWC Conference hosted at Aalto University in Finland.๐ซ๐ฎ Where she received the design exhibition award for (social) sustainability! ๐
