INSTA Time flies when you are having fun! 🎈10-year anniversary 🎈

Time flies when you are having fun! This month it is 🎉🎈10 years 🎈🎉 ago that I started my own company in coaching and training. It really feels surreal that I got to do this for 10 years already.

It all started with asking myself: 🌱“What is worth doing even if I fail? “ 🌱 Working as a coach and trainer was the answer.

Being a coach helps me everyday to see the beauty and strength of human beings. It feels like such a privilege to get to see my clients without their masks and performances. In witnessing their vulnerability, power, struggles and joys I cannot help but seeing every single one of my clients as beautiful and precious human beings. Such a gift! Especially in these divisive times.

Guiding groups of participants in short workshops or longer training programmes to new insights and to real actions towards the change they long for, is equally meaningful, joyful and energizing to do.

I want to thank all my coachees, workshop participants and the organisations that have hired me for their continued trust! 🙏 Also, a big thank you to my business buddy Esther Oosterling who has been a wonderful colleague, friend and support throughout this journey. Thanks for travelling with me! 🙏

Grateful for where I am and looking forward to continuing this journey that feels so meaningful and fulfilling to me. 😊

It is July already, half way through 2026. I always love to use the slower summer period to do a mid-year check-in so I can start the second half of the year with renewed intention. Reflecting on the past months and extrapolating this : “Where will I by at the end of 2026 if I change nothing”. Then taking some time to dream ahead.

Maybe you want to do some reflecting and dreaming as well? Here are some questions you can use for this. Pick what speaks to you and leave the rest. Writing down your answers is always very powerful (and great to read back at the end of the year!) But if you just want to think about these questions without any writing, that is obviously fine as well. You do you!

REFLECT
🌱 What felt meaningful in the past 6 months?

🌱 What brought joy in the past 6 months?

🌱 What made you curious and how did you follow that curiosity?

🌱 What energized you?

🌱 What did you dream of or wish for in the past 6 months?

🌱 Which strengths did you love using?

🌱 What was hard these past months?

🌱 How did you have your own back?

🌱 How did you nourish and sustain yourself?

🌱 What are you grateful for?

EXTRAPOLATE
🌱 If you keep doing what you did in the past 6 months- where will you be at the end of 2026?
- What will you have accomplished?
- How will you feel?
- What will you have lost?
- What will you have grown?

🌱 Is this where you would love to be at the end of 2026?

🌱 If not, what do you need to change?

DREAMING AHEAD
🌱 How do you want to feel in the coming 6 months?
- What choices and actions help you feel this way?

🌱 What would you love to create, develop or experiment with?
- What is the simplest most basic way to do this?
- If you started a pilot tomorrow, what would that pilot look like?
- What is an easy, small step you can take tomorrow to get started?

🌱 How can you have ( more) impact on the things or people that are most important to you?

🌱 What do you give yourself permission for?

The thing we accidentally give up when life gets busy. Recognize this? When you look back on the past years you suddenly realize that something that gave you loads of energy and joy when you were younger somehow is no longer in your life? Often, as the years go by, we unconsciously lose the very things that give us energy. Sometimes it’s a conscious choice. We tell ourselves we don't have the time anymore, or that it doesn't fit how our life is right now. But other times, it just happens without us noticing.

A while ago I thought back of my student years and the joy I had dancing. In my student days you could find me on the dancefloor from 12 to 6 in the morning, every week. Dancing always gave me an incredible amount of energy and brought me pure joy.

But over time, life changed. The clubbing faded, I moved, got married, and had children. And I danced less and less. Until I realized that I now only danced at weddings. And the phase of people getting married was over as well.

I called my best friend and told her about this realization. We took action and found 33+ and 40+ dance parties (parties for older people 😉) and went dancing again. It was so wonderful! Afterwards my body was tired and sore, but also: I felt light, cheerful, so alive and energized for days after! It felt like my life energy had been replenished.

👉 You don't just get new energy by taking breaks and resting; you get it by actively doing things that bring joy.

💃To help you take action today, I have three questions for you 💃

🌱What is that one thing you used to love but stopped doing? (just thinking about this thing probably brings a smile to your face right now!)

🌱How can you adapt this to fit your life today? For me weekly dancing does not fit my life anymore. Going dancing four times, a year is perfect right now.

🌱What is your immediate next step? I want to challenge you to take action today. Go google that dance party, look up a fun workshop, call a friend to go sailing for an afternoon or block an evening in your calendar to finally do that creative thing you used to love.

Balance is not a steady state you arrive at. Instead, it is a dynamic balance that asks conscious attention and actions. Your own telltale signs can serve as warning lights that let you know that it is time to take action to restore balance. If you know your own signs and check in regularly, you will notice much sooner when it is time to take action to course correct. If you don’t know your own signals you run the risk of only noticing when you are completely running on empty and then it will be much harder to find your way back to balance.

👉 Here are some questions that can help you find your own telltale signs:

🌱 What signs does your body give you?
e.g. aches or tension in certain areas, sleep changes, changes in appetite)

🌱 What thoughts are in your mind more often?
e.g. “ I can’t stop otherwise things will go wrong” . “What if this happens? “ “I just need to push on a little bit longer” “ I wish I could just lie down and do nothing” or more generally: you worry more, catastrophize more or think about all the things you need to do more.

🌱 What feelings are more present ?
e.g. you feel more fear, anger, annoyance, anxious, numb, sad, disengaged, hyper

🌱 What things do you do more of?
e.g. mindless scrolling, snap at loved ones, drink more alcohol, reach for snacks more, go to bed late

🌱 What things do you do less of?
e.g. exercising, meeting with friends, engaging in creative outlets

👉 If you notice these signs, don’t ignore them! Instead take action!

🌱 What actions can help you refill your battery?
e.g. a quiet evening with a book on the couch, or going for a walk.

🌱 What choices allow you to recharge and move back to balance?
e.g. take something of your schedule, ask someone to help out

Oftentimes it doesn’t have to be a big drastic choice or action. Small actions and choices repeatedly will help you find your way back to balance.

Do you already feel stressed when you start the day? Do you get up in de morning with your mind racing and telling you all the not enoughs?

❌I didn’t get enough sleep
❌I don’t have enough time
❌I don’t have enough energy

This way you start your day already feeling inadequate, already behind. A lot of people unconsciously start their day like this. This will often foreshadow a constant feeling of rush, chasing, falling short for the rest of the day. This causes overwhelm and feelings of imbalance.

When you start your day from lack, you start your day by activating your stress system

How to bring more balance to the start of your day? So that this scarcity start will not set the tone for your day?

STEP 1
🌱 Check in what thoughts are going through your mind and how you are feeling when you wake up . If the thoughts of scarcity and not feeling enough show up, proceed to step 2.

STEP 2
🌱 Acknowledge that you feel vulnerable, not enough, fearful, tired. Be kind and gentle when you are acknowledging this feeling. Acknowledge that this is hard.

Don’t skip this step! Finding more calm and balance it is not about bypassing difficult feelings or experiences.

STEP 3
🌱 Do something that connects you to joy, calm or gratitude. Experiment with one of the following things

💡Think of an image or memory that brings you joy or calm. Close your eyes for a minute and see this in your mind’s eye.

💡Start your day with a small moment of enjoyment. Savouring your cup of coffee, the sun outside, the giggling of your children. Look for the daily doses of joy in ordinary moments and be consciously present in this small moment

💡Practice gratitude. Search for something that you are grateful for and say this out loud to yourself or write it down. As Brene Brown’s research showed: gratitude is the birthplace of joy and enoughness .

“Yes, I did not get enough sleep, and I feel tired and that is hard. And I am grateful the sun is shining because this always brightens my day. “

This is not to negate the lack of sleep, but to balance it with seeing something that is enough or abundant as well, even while feeling tired.

👉Check in and take action if necessary!

Something I hear so very often in my coaching sessions and trainings is that my clients find it hard to say no because they feel guilty when saying no. I recently heard a beautiful distinction and reframe by Dr Becky Kennedy, that I think is super helpful in these situations.

Dr Becky distinguishes between “true guilt” and “not guilt” (she is still looking for a better term for the latter 😊)

TRUE GUILT is what happens inside of us when we do or say that feels out of alignment with our values (e.g. lying when honesty is an important value for you).

However, we often also label something as guilt when we are actually acting in alignment with our values . She calls this “ not guilt.” This “not guilt” often comes up when we say no or set boundaries.

‘NOT GUILT’ describes the discomfort we feel when we express our needs or act in a way that is in line with our values, but it inconveniences or upsets someone else. It is also what we feel when we’ve acted outside of cultural norms or pressures, when we go against expectations.

💡 What we often do, is interpreting someone else's discomfort as our own guilt. When you say no or are setting boundaries you are NOT doing something wrong, but you are experiencing the discomfort of the other person’s (possible) reaction. This icky feeling you get when you say no are the GROWING PAINS from living your life in a way that is very aligned with your values but might cause discomfort for others.

It is about learning to make space for these difficult feelings while acting in alignment with your needs and values.

🌱Next time you say no or set boundaries, reframe what you see as guilt to growing pains that come from living a life in alignment with your values.

🌱 It can be helpful to explicitly state to yourself the value or need you are honouring when you say no. “I say no because I value…”.” By saying no I say yes to ……”

Do you sometimes think about making a career change? But do you feel stuck- because well, “I am a scientist, I am a project manager.”

Getting unstuck starts with asking yourself: Are you your job or do you have a job? Check in with yourself. When people ask you at a party: what do you do? Do you say “I am a project manager, I am a scientist?” There is a good chance that you will indeed say: I AM...

Nothing wrong with that. But if you actually want to do something different, this language has a big disadvantage. By constantly saying to yourself and others: I am a scientist/researcher/project manager you unconsciously conflate your job with who you are, your identity. That makes seeing other possibilities and taking other steps very difficult, if not impossible. To be able to do something different, you would have to change who you are. Changing jobs then means changing identities! And so we unconsciously and unintentionally get stuck.

That is not surprising because from an early age we are asked: what do you want to be when you grow up? This link between your identity and your job is already created at an early age.

🌱 To be able to see new possibilities and opportunities, it is important to create space between you and your job, to consciously pay attention to the fact that you are not your job.
The good news is we don’t only keep ourselves stuck with language. By changing our language we can also create new space and see new opportunities.

👉 Changing your language = creating space

🌱 Start experimenting. When people ask you what you do, don't answer with "I am a scientist/researcher". Experiment with answering in a different way: I work as a researcher. I have a job as a project manager. I work in academia as a researcher and teacher. This will create your first bit of distance. So you no longer equate your job with your identity. You are not your job, you have this job or you work in this job. You can also say it to yourself in your head, several times a day.

You need this first step to be able to see possibilities for alternative career paths.

We often think that what we need to be able to take that scary step is more confidence. If I would feel more confident than I would be able to succeed. Once we no longer feel fear or uncertainty then we can take this step.
We look at successful people and we think they are so confident. We think that their confidence plays a big part in their success. Tara Mohr calls this the “confidence myth”. That if we had more confidence we would have more career success, if we had more confidence we would be able to pursue our longings to make more of a contribution with our work.
So we wait until we feel more confident, we wait until we trust or are sure that we have the abilities and qualities that are needed. But rest assured, the moment you feel you have the abilities you know are lacking now , the voice of self-doubt will come up with something new you should be unsure or worried about. So you still won’t feel confident.

💡What if you don’t need more confidence? What if you don’t have to wait until fear and self-doubt will go away. (Because they won’t!)

👉 What is helpful instead to be able to take the plunge?
It is about learning to recognize that our fear and doubt will always be speaking up. Especially when we want to take a step towards something that is really close to our hearts!

🌱It is about hearing the voice of fear and self-doubt but not taking direction from it. To let the fear accompany you, but not let it lead the way. So we don’t have to get rid of fear and self-doubt. We just need to learn to change our relationship to them. To learn to take a step, while we feel fear and doubt. It starts with recognizing when the voice of fear and self-doubt speaks up. To say to yourself : that is my the voice of fear or self-doubt talking. When we can observe this voice, we create space between this voice and ourselves and we can then consciously choose how to respond to this voice.

🌱It is also about learning to trust that if we fail, we can pick ourselves up and can learn to do better next time.

Could you use help in relating differently to your self-doubt and build trust in yourself? Then individual coaching might be helpful. Just send me an email and we can plan a free exploration call to see if coaching would be a good fit for you.

Yesterday... on my way to give a on and for students of the AI honours programme from the Radboud University University. Stress is an inevitable part of living and learning how to deal with stress and take good care of yourself are essential life skills. Happy that the students got the opportunity to participate in this workshop and got insights and tools that will not only help them during their studies, but also in the rest of their lives.

Thank you Olympia Colizoli for inviting me back for the 4th year to give this workshop!

Finally, home, chores done, and now time to relax. You crash on the couch but find it hard to switch off. It is not strange we find it hard to relax and rest when we are home:

🏃‍➡️We live in a society were being busy is a badge of honour, where constantly doing, rushing, striving is expected.

🔊A society in which we are bombarded with a constant stream of input (messages, questions, demands, images, sounds, smells, etc)

📝We often have work that is never finished

🦸‍♀️We have multiple roles that demand a lot of us.

So many of us are in a high alert stressful state during the day. Trying to get as much done as possible, responding to so many requests, questions, messages. And then after a very full stressful day, we feel tired and want to switch off, but are unable to.

👉 Two things you need to know about being able to rest and relax.
🌱 Switching on/off is a myth. Our body and mind need transition time and transition cues.
🌱 Rest and sleep is not about feeling tired enough, it is about feeling safe enough.

We cannot switch from driving in 6th gear for most of the day, right to 2nd gear when we get home. If you would do that in your car it would feel very clunky, and it is also unsafe to do. The same is the case for us humans. We need to transition more slowly from a high alert doing state, to a state of resting and relaxing. For us to enter a rest and relax state we need to help ourselves wind down more slowly by giving our body and mind cues of safety.

🌱 An end of the workday routine- doing the same thing each day to mark the end of a workday- will give our nervous system signals of safety so it can shift down gradually to rest and relaxation mode.

Some ideas:
💡putting your laptop and workbag out of sight
💡take a shower
💡change clothes
💡read for 15 minutes
💡take a walk around the block
💡listen to music or make music
💡doing some yoga or other exercises.
💡telling yourself out loud that it is ok to rest (while putting a calming hand on your body): e.g. “ it was a busy day and I have done enough for today. “

Experiment with building an end of work day routine and see what difference it makes!

Let me know in the comments some of your ideas for a transition ritual!
