NIOZ@Sea: The TIP-TOP Expedition 03/02/2025

🌊 The NIOZ@Sea TIP-TOP Expedition blog! 🌊

RV Pelagia departed from Mindelo on Sao Vicente (Cabo Verde) on Tuesday 28 January 2025 for the TIP-TOP Expedition and is due to arrive at Las Palmas on Gran Canaria (Spain) on Wednesday 19 February. This is also her first voyage of her final year.

Several tipping points in Earth’s system could be crossed in the near future due to human activities, and hence there is a need to understand such potential abrupt changes on Earth. During this cruise, an international team of researchers, led by Rick Hennekam, will reconstruct abrupt changes in North African climate and environment using sediment cores from research vessel Pelagia to determine whether these past abrupt events are tipping points.

Moreover, the multidisciplinary team will also maintain two dust-collecting buoys and a sediment-trap mooring that have been monitoring Saharan dust and its marine-environmental effects since 2013. This expedition will collect data that provide insights into (abrupt) environmental changes, with relevance for better understanding past, present, and future changes.

Don’t miss a beat! Follow the blog for the latest updates and behind-the-scenes stories from the expedition at https://www.nioz.nl/en/blog/64pe540.

NIOZ@SEA blog | The team is currently sampling their 3rd out of 40 stations during their 4 week long expedition in the North Atlantic. The team is set to sample the water column and sediments for trace metals, isotopes, ligands, and biological parameters, that is, phytoplankton in the surface ocean.
