Last weekend, our second Module of the IDEA League Challenge Programme happened in Aachen. Led by RWTH Aachen UniversityTH, the module offered discussions with case owners, networking, leisure activities, groupwork, and professional support on topics of design urban mobility systems to move people and goods sustainably.

And here is our final wrap-up post on our IDEA League Summer School "Geophysical Monitoring in Geothermal Systems" at ETH Zürich this summer.

Students did a lot: dives into theories (from seismics to electromagnetics blending), field visits and industry talks.

From August 25–29, 2025, the Summer School “Spaces of Homelessness” brought together IDEA League students to critically explore how homelessness is experienced, regulated, and contested in urban spaces. Through lectures, workshops, and interdisciplinary projects, participants examined the social, political, economic, and cultural dimensions that shape and sustain homelessness.

A week full of inspiring cross-disciplinary insights for future geographers, urban planners, and civil engineers — encouraging deep reflection on housing policy and the future of our cities!

In August, we ran our "Electric Transport Grids as Multi-functional and Sustainable Urban Infrastructures" Summer School at TU Delft.

Students reimagined systems in Amsterdam, Beirut, Manchester, and Rimini, turning trolley and ferry grids into energy networks that power cities, ports, and construction sites.
We also welcomed guest lectures!

What an inspiring week in Crema!

From 8-13 September 2025, the "Healing Our Towns" Summer School gathered IDEA League students to reimagine how small and medium towns can adapt to climate change. Through community walks, co-design workshops, and close work with local actors, participants explored ways to make Crema more resilient to heat, water stress, and social challenges.

A week of learning, collaboration, and bold ideas to help towns face the future.

Also a month ago, we hosted the "Artificial Intelligence for Engineering Applications" summer school, this time at TU Delft, in Delft.

Here are a few words from our organiser that perfectly sum it up: "This year’s summer school was a celebration of curiosity, collaboration, and connection.
I left the week feeling inspired, a little tired, and very grateful."

Almost a month ago, we had our IDEA League Summer School “Analysis & Modelling of Road-User Behaviour” at Chalmers University of Technology !

A full week of working hard, thinking forward, and bridging theory with practice. From modelling driver behaviour, analysing naturalistic data, to seeing micromobility in action at Volvo. Teams of master’s & PhD students came together, shared ideas, broke academic silos, and explored how modelling can make our roads safer.

What an inspiring week in Piacenza!

From the 21rst to the 25th of July, participants of the "Empowering Decision-Aiding: Evaluation Approaches to Complexity" Summer school, spent the week diving into real-world decision challenges exploring tools and methods to evaluate complex systems, from urban resilience to climate adaptation. Through hands-on case studies, co-design sessions, and multidisciplinary collaboration, participants sharpened their ability to think critically and act decisively in uncertain environments.

A full week of deep focus, cross-disciplinary learning, and practical problem-solving guided by experts in decision science and systems thinking.
As the tutors put it: “An opportunity to explore structured ways of navigating complexity and making informed decisions in uncertain contexts.”

That’s a wrap on last week’s IDEA League Summer School: “Closing the Loop – (Re-)Design for Disassembly & Circular Economy” at Chalmers University of Technology!

IDEA league students at work redesigning a drone towards circular economy. Changing the design for lowering emissions as well as making the assembly and disassembly both automation friendly as well as easier for humans to perform. A full week of focus work and team building by combining multidisciplinary knowledge domains as well as learning by doing and interaction in the teams.

Fun as well as insightful learnings throughout the full week hands-on learning, collaboration across disciplines, and bringing bold ideas to life.
Work hard, think forward, build better.
