Reflecting on an inspiring evening on the TU Delft Library green roof!

We wrapped up both the academic year and SG’s Rooftop Sessions: The Brain with a full-house outdoor screening of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

The evening opened with a critical introduction by Oscar Greenwell (MSc Science Communication and founder of the VOX Film Club). Oscar framed the movie’s core conflict, individual rebellion versus oppressive institutional control, in a modern light. While Ken Kesey’s story set in 1963 Oregon feels distinctly retro, its themes surrounding mental health care, autonomy, and societal pressure remain urgently relevant today.

Events like these remind us of the power of bringing film, philosophy, and campus culture together under the open sky. Thanks to all the students and community members who made the evening so memorable!

Recap: VOX Delft Book Club x Studium Generale on Invisible Cities

On Wednesday, February 11, 2026, students gathered at The Nook in the TU Delft Library for the session of our book club series on Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities (1972), organized by VOX Delft, a student club powered by Studium Generale.

Framed as an ongoing conversation between emperor Kublai Khan and explorer Marco Polo, Calvino’s novel uses surreal descriptions of fictional cities to unpack fundamental questions about human nature, societal structures, and how we experience the space around us.

The session gave participants across faculties a chance to step outside technical frameworks and engage in open-ended, multidisciplinary reflection. It served as a great reminder of the power of literature to spark new ways of thinking about culture, architecture, and living together.

‘What is it like to be you?’ Recap of the Rooftop Sessions: The Brain

High above the city on the rooftop of the TU Library, we paused to ask a question we rarely make time for: what is it actually like to be you?

Designer and researcher Amber van Gastel invited participants into her Conversation Cabinet for a session unlike any digital exchange, one built not on words, but on images, objects and association. Using her self-developed Detailed Talks card set, participants discovered how meaning can emerge through intuition and metaphor, rather than the quick, efficient language we default to every day.

What unfolded was a beautiful reminder that no two minds see the same thing the same way. The same image sparked completely different associations, memories and feelings from person to person, and instead of resolving those differences, the group simply sat with them. Listening beyond language. Making room for multiple perspectives to exist side by side.

Amber, a neurodivergent designer who developed Detailed Talks after a late autism and ADHD diagnosis, created these cards to bridge the gap where literal language often falls short. Her session offered exactly that: a gentle, human tool for connection in a world that rarely slows down enough to allow it.

Rooftop Recap

And now for something completely different…

We spent several days doing events on rooftops around campus this quarter, and invoked a completely different side of ourselves. One that taps into deeper feelings of what it means to be human. And the best part: you loved it so much we want to do it again next year.

At 5:30am on a Wednesday morning on top of Kanaalweg 4, the sun rose and we felt a rapturous euphoria as TU Delft’s historian Abel Streefland played baroque songs on his viola da gamba. At 10pm on a Tuesday, we gazed upon the moon from the roof of the Aerospace faculty and felt like we weren’t alone in the universe. An afternoon in the scorching sun on the grass roof of the TU Delft Library allowed us to find connection between our inner experiences. And another evening on top of the observatory at Kanaalweg 4 gave us the peace and quiet we needed to take in the beauty of the Delft skyline and paint it.

But why? It’s simple really. We spend almost the entire year indoors in this country. The weather can be atrocious, grey and cold and wet and windy, and our world becomes confined to the inside of a few architectural spaces.

Now that we know how fun it is to get high by taking to the roof, look for us on these and other buildings around Delft next year.

What’s the first word that comes to mind when you think of geopolitics today? Complex? Fast-moving? Confusing? Unprecedented? Polycrisis? Dumpster fire?
Conflicts today aren’t confined to simple country lines. Actors on the global stage seem to wander into war zones without rhyme or reason. But there are patterns – historical, cultural, political, personal, economic – behind all these movements.

We’ve invited Frans Osinga, professor in War Studies at the Institute of Security and Global Affairs, to help you understand what is actually happening and how it fits into these long-standing patterns. And, just as importantly, what you can do as a student and how you can play a role in a meaningful way that aligns with your own values.

AI Research Workshop: Designing Disconnect

Can AI help us make sense of what (dis-)connection looks like?
Do you think research can be playful, deep, creative, and exploratory at once? In this session, you will use AI-generated images to explore loneliness, connection, and the hidden emotions behind everyday scenes. The workshop will be hosted by Jenna Pfeifer, PhD candidate at the cognitive robotics lab (Mechanical Engineering). And afterwards, we’ll connect over drinks. You will:
Learn about current research on loneliness and its cognitive mechanisms. Play with AI prompting to create vivid visuals in real time. Meet other students and find out what connection means to them. Find out who’s more biased – you or AI!

Lunch is included after the workshop.
