🌊 Storm Dano named after IHE Delft professor 🟦

Coastal engineer and IHE Delft Emeritus Professor Dano Roelvink has been selected as one of the storm names for the 2026–2027 season by the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI), together with the UK Met Office and Met Éireann.

It’s a fitting tribute to a career spanning more than 40 years of pioneering research into storm surges, waves, sandy coasts and the resilience of coastal areas.

Roelvink's work has helped transform how we understand and manage dynamic coastlines. His pioneering coastal models, developed during the early years of computer modelling, continue to be used worldwide to better understand and predict the impacts of extreme weather.

His legacy of “living shores” — working with natural coastal dynamics to build resilience — continues to inspire coastal research and practice around the world.

Storm Dano is expected to make landfall sometime this autumn or winter.

🌍💧Taliban’s Hydropolitics and the International Engagement Dilemma

Five years after the Taliban returned to power, Afghanistan continues to face major challenges in managing its water resources. Incomplete infrastructure projects, limited technical capacity, growing water stress in Kabul, and stalled regional water diplomacy highlight the urgency of the situation.

But isolation alone has not solved the problem. In IHE Delft’s Water Governance blog FLOWS, Affiliate Researcher Mohd Faizee argues for a more pragmatic approach to international engagement—one that prioritizes technical cooperation, knowledge exchange, and regional water diplomacy, while also drawing on the expertise of Afghan water professionals living abroad.

Water cannot wait for politics to be resolved. Constructive technical engagement could help address immediate water challenges while creating space for longer-term cooperation across Afghanistan and the region.

Can countries trust each other in sharing water? Data, relationships and the everyday practice of transboundary water cooperation. 🌍💧

IHE Delft Alumni and anyone interested are invited to participate in the next Alumni online seminar by Bota Sharipova, Lecturer and Researcher in Water Conflict, Cooperation and Diplomacy at IHE Delft.

The seminar explores whether countries can trust each other when cooperating on transboundary waters, and how trust shapes water cooperation. Drawing on research in the Sava and Syr Darya river basins, Bota examines how data sharing, interpersonal relationships and institutional routines influence trust, mistrust and cooperation. The research shows that cooperation does not require complete trust: institutions and repeated interactions can turn uncertainty into predictable practices.

At the Third WaPOR Hackathon from Tools to Decisions 🏆 Canewise from India and Pakistan emerged as the winner!

CaneWise brings together WaPOR 𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮, 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱-𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻-𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 to address a critical challenge in sugarcane command areas: translating water data into actionable decisions for more efficient and sustainable water management.

We congratulate the Canewise team 09 Niyati Seth Sherly Mazhuvanchery Dr. Bushra Ghaffar Fawzia Tarannum.

This third and final WaPOR Hackathon looked at how to turn tools developed with WaPOR data into real decisions and practical action.

IHE Delft at World Water Week 2026 💧

On Wednesday at World Water Week in Stockholm, Susanne Schmeier, Professor of Water Cooperation, Law and Diplomacy at IHE Delft, gave keynote speeches at key sessions on the challenges faced by River Basin Organizations and their solutions and the often unsung benefits of transboundary water cooperation.

Addressing the session Leaders’ Table: Resilient River Basin Organizations for People & Progress, Schmeier
gave a keynote focussed on the urgent need for river basin organizations (RBOs) to adapt to a rapidly changing world. From atmospheric rivers and shifting moisture flows to growing cross-boundary pressures, outdated assumptions and capacity gaps are testing the resilience of basin institutions.
The discussion explored pathways forward—including more flexible mandates, scenario planning, adaptive management, and emergency tools—to help RBOs navigate uncertainty and respond to emerging challenges.

In the session Interactive Dialogue D: Water for Cooperation, she emphasized that water cooperation is about more than managing shared water — it is about building relationships, managing disagreements and creating shared benefits. As climate change, water scarcity and geopolitical tensions increase, inclusive and conflict-sensitive cooperation, supported by science, strong institutions and better data, can turn shared waters from a source of tension into a platform for peace, resilience and sustainable development.

In her third session of the day, Cooperation Currents – Advancing Resilience and Development through Water Cooperation, Schmeier talked about the benefits of water cooperation based on GIZ research, which go far beyond the water sector. However, these benefits are often not regcognized. As a result, the full potential of these benefits are not met.

Her contribution connected water governance with diplomacy, peace and development — reinforcing that rivers are not only resources to be managed, but also opportunities to keep countries talking and working together for people and prosperity.
