Founded as the TU Delft Solar Boat Team, we have been designing, building and racing cutting-edge boats driven by sustainable tech for over 15 years. In 2021, we made the switch from Solar Energy to Hydrogen and this year we decided to continue under the name of TU Delft Hydro Motion Team. The TU Delft Hydro Motion Team is a Dreamteam of the TU Delft. Our team consists of 25 ambitious students wit

h different study backgrounds. Each year a new team builds a new boat made in conjunction with the knowledge of industry experts and the experience of alumni. This project grants the opportunity to test components operating together to accelerate innovation in the maritime industry. The team has been developing for years, exploring uncharted waters. We've sailed at a top speed of 55 km/h on solar energy, with our custom-designed wings we made our boat fly, we became world champions in the Open Sea Class, and we built the first flying hydrogen boat! We will continue this motion of development to contribute to a sustainable world. This year, we optimize every part of our boat for the use of hydrogen. We will design our boat to excel in endurance, speed and manoeuvrability. To put our boat to the test, we will participate in the Offshore Competition of the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge to become world champions. Our team shows what a multidisciplinary team of driven students can achieve with the right mindset and by combining their strengths. Being the engineers of the future, we take the next step towards a sustainable world.

Hydrogen offers incredible energy density, but with that comes the need for careful testing and safe system integration.

That’s why we’ve been working closely with TNO to test some of the most innovative parts of our liquid hydrogen system.

Recently, we successfully demonstrated that a fuel cell can run directly on the boil-off gas from our liquid hydrogen tank. Instead of venting hydrogen into the atmosphere, we can now convert it into electricity to power onboard systems.

Software. You won’t see it when the boat flies past you, yet it’s what allows the boat to think. Every decision, every adjustment, and every response to changing conditions starts there. But software alone cannot move a boat. It needs a reliable electrical system that can translate commands into action.

With the DC-DC converters and charger provided by MEAN WELL, we can supply every component on board with exactly what it needs, from the smallest sensor to the main control systems. This allows power to be converted safely and reliably, creating a seamless electrical system throughout the boat. You can think of it as the boat’s nervous system, linking each sensor and component to the onboard computer, which acts as the brain.

Without these connections, there is no communication, no feedback, no control. We’re proud to have MEAN WELL supporting us in making this possible.

A foiling boat would not be able to fly without its wings: the foils. These underwater wings generate the lift that raises the boat above the water, while also providing the stability needed to make the flight as smooth, efficient, and comfortable as possible.

Building our wings would not have been possible without Qconcepts. Their expertise, facilities, and support enabled us to transform our designs into high-quality carbon-fiber foils. Working together, we were able to manufacture the foils exactly as envisioned and turn our innovative design into reality!

Not everything happens the way you would dream it to go.

Yesterday we were not able to start at the Endurance race, due to some technical issues. After working so incredibly hard to get the boat ready in time, this was a big disappointment for the team.

This year was one filled with long days and short nights for us. Spending all this time not only building something we could only dream of before, but also growing together and getting to know each other like a new family.

We are really proud of the boat that we have build. Our polar bear with golden struts has shown what it is capable of, showing off its elegant banked turns like a bird flying low over the Mediterranean Sea.

We leave Monaco with a sense of pride and accomplishment, and will use this experience to grow even further.

Big waves, bigger teamwork!

Today we sailed the 16 Nautical Mile race. Because of the weather and wave height we were not able to go on our foils, but still managed to get to 2nd place!! But big waves create cool shots!!

What a day!

Today we were able to test our flying polar bear on the waters of Monaco! After passing the technical inspection, we had some time to practice our banking turns (see video).

A hydrogen powered foiling raceboat. Or better said, a flying raceboat. This roaring polar bear with golden struts rises above the waters of the Merwede in Dordrecht. Adjusting its wings 400 times per second. Making sure the waves have no influence on the boat.

Sometimes we forget how special this is, it almost feels like a dream…
