Katundu Imasiku has built a career around a question that sits at the heart of climate and energy research: how do we move from technical potential to practical implementation?

His journey has taken him from organisational problem-solving in Zambia to renewable energy research, green hydrogen planning and academic publishing.

What can a restaurant contribute beyond what it serves on the plate?

For BSN MBA student Rejeanne Vlietman, Managing Director of Den Anker Restaurant in Cape Town, that question has grown into something much bigger.

Work that began around food security and community kitchens has led to conversations about small-scale farmers, fair access to market, shorter supply chains and the role hospitality businesses can play within the wider food system.

Rejeanne is now exploring whether small-scale farmers could be connected more directly with hospitality operators. It is an ambitious idea, with real questions around pricing, technology, logistics, trust and commercial viability still to be answered.

At the same time, her MBA is giving her the opportunity to step back from a business she knows well, critically examine its systems and take new thinking back to her team.

We spoke to Rejeanne about sustainable hospitality, doing business for good and why creating value can extend far beyond the plate.

Yet across Africa, business leaders and entrepreneurs have been doing exactly that for years.

Entrepreneurs in South Africa’s informal economy operate with changing customer needs, limited resources and unpredictable conditions. They stay close to their markets, respond quickly and build businesses through trust and community relationships.

This connects with an important point raised by Somaya Moll: leaders can learn from regions where uncertainty has long been part of doing business.

Perhaps the question is not only how African leaders can learn from established global business models.
