How can education and industry work more closely together to prepare young people for careers in hospitality and tourism?

For Hannie van Liebergen, L&D Africa and Indian Ocean at Hilton Hotels, it starts with better communication, a greater understanding of individual needs and a willingness to listen to future talent.

At the Future Leaders Challenge South Africa, Hannie shared why employers need to personalise development, create opportunities for regular feedback and embrace reverse mentoring. She also highlighted the importance of introducing students to the wide range of careers available across hospitality and tourism.

By bringing students, educators and employers together, the Future Leaders Challenge helps identify gaps, strengthen pathways into employment and create opportunities for South Africa’s next generation.

After three years of involvement in the Future Leaders Challenge South Africa, Craig Erasmus has seen its impact from both sides: ambitious students gaining direct exposure to the industry and employers meeting future talent they would genuinely consider hiring.

As CEO of and a Strategic Board Member of the Future Leaders Challenge, Craig believes the programme is also helping education and industry become more closely aligned around the challenges facing hospitality and tourism.

His message extends beyond hotels. Tour operators, destination marketing companies, service providers and other partners all have knowledge, experience and opportunities to contribute.

Bringing this wider ecosystem into the conversation gives students a clearer view of the careers available to them while helping organisations connect with the people who could shape their future.

Some events are over by the end of the day. Others stay with you a little longer.
A few weeks later, the conversations are still what stand out most.

Students, chefs, educators, hospitality leaders and government representatives all brought their own perspectives to the room. Ideas were shared, questions were asked, and people who do not often get the chance to work closely together found common ground around Egypt's culinary heritage and the future of hospitality and tourism.

A few weeks ago, Egypt hosted the first-ever Crafts & Culture Challenge, one of the initiatives within the Future Leaders Platform, bringing together education, industry and government around a shared appreciation for culinary heritage and vocational excellence.

With sharing the vision behind the initiative, many other speakers, judges, mentors and educators shared their knowledge and experience throughout the day.

Here's how Egypt got us started.

Two weeks ago, the Future Leaders Platform Egypt edition took place across two cities, two Hilton properties, and three connected initiatives.

In Cairo, Ramses Hilton hosted the Craft & Culture Challenge Egypt, where students, chefs, educators, and industry leaders came together to explore culinary heritage, cultural storytelling, and the role of young talent in carrying traditions forward.

In Alexandria, Hilton Alexandria King’s Ranch hosted the Future Leaders Challenge Egypt and the School Directors Alliance Egypt, bringing together students, schools, industry partners, and decision-makers for presentations, dialogue, leadership development, and education-industry collaboration.

Both locations gave the programme a strong and fitting setting: professional, welcoming, and rooted in the hospitality and tourism spirit the platform stands for.

DAY 1 RECAP 🇪🇬✨

What an incredible way to start our flagship initiative: The Future Leaders Challenge Egypt.

Tourism and hospitality leaders, partners, educators, students, and government representatives came together with one shared message:

“This is what we need.”

A day filled with connection, dialogue, collaboration, and a shared passion for Egypt and its future in Tourism and Hospitality.

From discussing workforce development and human capital strategies to exploring how we can make the industry more attractive for future generations, Day 1 showed the power of bringing the right people together around a common mission.

Egypt’s rich history, culture, and hospitality were proudly represented throughout the day, with students and industry leaders united in their desire to showcase the very best of what the country has to offer.

Together, we have already taken important first steps toward building a stronger, more sustainable tourism and hospitality ecosystem for Egypt and its future leaders.

And we’re just getting started.
