Looking back at the ArtEZ Final of Max van der Weerden ( )

IN A YEAR OR FOUR of Max Thomas was a journey through the last four years of his life at ArtEZ.
Stepping onto the stage of the ArtEZ Concerthall, the singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist translated his personal growth and musical evolution into a captivating live performance. Blending deep soul, gospel, and folk roots, Max wove together a sonic tapestry inspired by legendary artists like Stevie Wonder, Jacob Collier, and Allen Stone.

As he moved between live vocals, guitar, keys, and piano, the audience was pulled into an intimate, alive narrative of self-expression, turning his past four years of life into a cohesive, unforgettable musical story.

"I'm very proud of my Karelian identity and had the absolute pleasure to share my culture and story with friends from all over the world, who've become like a second family over the years." - Inari

Inari also recently won the The Heij Konijn Price. This Fund in Arnhem provides financial support to ten to fifteen young artists each year. In addition to the donations, and to raise the fund’s profile among young artists, an annual award is presented yearly to a graduating student!

Inas Mujadzic (bass) and Jochem Janssen (drums) started studying music together in 2022 at ArtEZ, where they discovered their shared passion for fusion music. Together with Haaije Bergstra (guitar) and Dax Hemelrijk (keys), they formed the band Ground Effect during their studies. The young jazz fusion quartet blends its roots in traditional jazz with a modern sound. In their original compositions, the group places great emphasis on tone, dynamics, and catchy melodies, creating compelling storytelling through thoughtful arrangements. Inspired by artists like the Pat Metheny Group or Kurt Rosenwinkel, Ground Effect combines the nostalgic character of this music with their own musical voice and a vibrant energy on stage. They will mainly present songs from their upcoming album.

This event is open to the public. No tickets needed.

ArtEZ Finals Highlighted: Max Thomas - "In A Year Or Four"
Wednesday 10 June 2026 // 21:00 - 22:00 // ArtEZ Concerthall

Max Thomas is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist with a soul deeply rooted in the music of Stevie Wonder, Jacob Collier, and Allen Stone. Growing up listening to a wide range of genres, it was Stevie's Songs in the Key of Life that changed everything, pulling Max into the warm embrace of soul, and later into the rich complexity of jazz.
Discovering Snarky Puppy, and witnessing Cory Henry's breathtaking freedom at the keys, deepened that journey further.

Weaving together vocals, guitar, keys and piano, Max Thomas crafts music that feels both personal and alive. His original work carries the spirit of his influences while carving out a sound that is entirely his own.

ArtEZ Finals Highlighted: Manolis Matthaiakis ()
Tuesday 9 June 2026 // 19:00 - 20:00 // ArtEZ Concerthall

Greek guitarist, Manolis Matthaiakis, is graduating on the 9th of June from ArtEZ. After four inspiring years he has set his focus on experimentation and finding all the possible sounds that the guitar has to offer. With his music he creates abstract and minimal soundscapes through looping and extended techniques.

Having been part of several bands of different styles (jazz, pop, Afrobeat, Brazilian, middle eastern and more) throughout his studies in ArtEZ he found his path and personal voice in the experimentation and in the focus of the sound itself. Manolis invites the listener to focus on the different aspects of sound and remind them that beauty can be found in the simplicity.

Without the need of external electronics and with a strong sense of improvisation, Manolis is creating sonic soundscapes that transport the listener from reality and invites them to look into their thoughts. Layers of different sounds and textures that create a audio painting that is changing over time and create a sense of depth and space in the room. Glueing this experience together are visual graphics that follow the music and enhance the atmosphere.

This event is open to the public. No tickets needed.
