Dutch to English Translation:
The impact of not eating meat for a week
Save 7 months of water waste from showering
If you don't eat meat for 1 day you will save the average 1700Litre of water that was used for the prodcution of your daily dose of meat. On average it takes an estimate of 51L of water for 1 showering session, so by not eating meat for 1 whole week you'll save a whopping 7 months of showering water.
Save 111km of driving your automobile.
If you don't eat meat for 1 day you'll save the 1600gr of CO2 exhaust that was created by producing your daily portion of meat. 1km of driving your car will exhaust 101gr of CO2, so by not eating meat for a week you'll save the exhaust from driving your car for 111km.
Save 1 happy chicken
If you don't eat meat for 1 day you'll save an average of 200gr of meat. 1 chicken holds about 1500gr of consumable meat, so by not eating meat for a whole week you'll save the total consumption amount of 1 whole chicken.
Save a tree 7 months worth of work
If you don't eat meat for 1 day you'll save the 1600gr of CO2 exhaust that was created by producing your daily dose of meat. A tree can absord that 1600gr of CO2 exhaust in roughly 1 month by converting it into O2. So by not eating meat for 1 week you'll negate the exhaust that will take 1 tree 7 months to convert into oxygen.
* For these statistics an estimate of 200gr meat consumption per day per person was used.
National week without meat calls for every citizen of the Netherlands to join in on the National week without meat. Everyone that will endure not eating meat for one whole week will save 6 months of showering water, the co2 waste of driving a car for 111 km and the consumption weight of 1 chicken. A tree will take a whopping 7 months to negate this co2 exhaust. By not eating meat we will attain this effect in just 1 week.
The initiators.
National week without meat is an initiative by Isabel Boerdam, familiar from ‘De Hippe Vegetarier’, Backed up by the Green Protein Alliance including all of her members. The purpose of the initiative is giving a taste to the Dutch people how easy and tasty it can be to not eat meat for a day, and to create awareness for the positive impact it can have as opposed the the small amount of effort.
What is the motive?
We *the initiators* think that consuming meat every day should no longer be part of our current zeitgeist and are aiming towards a *Flexitarien* eating pattern, in which meat and fish will be exchanged by plant products. Tasting is believing. Because plantbased food is not boring or bland, or complicated. It’s a small effort with a unimaginably positive impact upon the environment which we inhabit. By not eating meat for 1 day in a week we’ll make the difference in our future together.
