ArtEZ Composition for Film and Theatre

The Composition for Film and Theatre program is an hybrid study at the ArtEZ Academy of Music Arnhem and lasts four years.

Huba de Graaff, lecturer in Composition for Film and Theatre at ArtEZ Academy of Music in Arnhem, wins the Buma Classical Lifetime Achievement Award.

Despite her experimental approach, which incorporates mixing desks, laptops and self-built instruments, De Graaff’s work remains accessible to a broad audience. Her opera Qaqnas premiered at the Holland Festival in June. Earlier, she gained recognition with operas such as Apera, inspired by communication between apes, and Pornopera, built around the sounds of a couple making love.

The awards was presented on Sunday 21 June during the closing evening of the Day of the Composer.
This annual nationwide festival celebrates contemporary music and its creators, with performances, concerts and activities taking place across the Netherlands!

"Before I started my composition studies at ArtEZ, I was working in musical theatre for many years. Initially I thought I am done with musicals... but the music brought me back to it.
So I wrote a dark Musical with a big orchestral score as my Final "The Shadow Man"."

ArtEZ Finals Highlighted:
Natalie Röder - Autonomous-Adaptive Conceptual Music – a hybrid form of music in the age of Artificial Intelligence.

Natalie Röder is a composer for film and theatre. During her master’s studies, her research project focused on developing a concept that blurs the boundaries between autonomous and functional music, opening up new creative and economic perspectives for composers.

Based on this research, she developed the concept of Autonomous-Adaptive Music: a working model in which artificial intelligence plays an important role alongside human creativity. The aim is to approach music not merely as a functional tool serving a pre-existing purpose, but rather as the starting point and inspiring core of a layered creative process.

As part of her graduation project, this model will be presented both theoretically and in practice.

Thirdyear CFT-students Dani, Djavan, Paula, Luan and Noah have composed pieces which will be performed on the 20th of June during the national Dag van de Componist celebrations.

They worked with teacher Wilma Pistorius to create open score works (which can be performed by any instruments in any setting). The performance will take place in Central Station Arnhem, with performances by Orkest de Ereprijs. These are fresh new works, and the performance at around 12pm is free. Come join us!

ArtEZ finals highlighted: Simon Krust - "ReplAiced"

Born in 1997, Simon grew up in a time of Change. When he was in his early teens, there were no Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp and even when they started to become more and more relevant in our society he did not immediately participate in this trend. As someone who experienced this development from an "outside perspective", Simon started to have concerns about social dynamics and inter-human connection. And especially now with the rise of Artificial Intelligence he sees the "Human Role" to be in danger. With especially Artists being more and more replaced he decided to dedicate his finals to this topic in hope to raise some awareness.

Matthias Johann Böhm - Writer's block

"I am a composer and orchestrator based in Hamburg, Germany who had the honour to take part in this wonderful study program online.
Throughout the years I have experienced many events that lead to different forms of Writer’s Block.

For my graduation I’d like to show you my own ways of fighting it, of searching for inspiration and of coming up with more unconventional, some might say absurd concepts to find my musical language. Let’s turn the creative blockades into a meaningful process of growth not just as a composer but as a human being."

Firstyear CFT-student Franzi Frank during her recording session with the Matangi String Quartet on 26 May in the ArtEZ concert hall. A firstyear CFT project of students of Rainer Quade, with some fourthyear students recording their work as well this time. New pieces for string quartet!

CFT students Noah Noordzee and Jonathan Schäfer will perform at the Andriessen Festival in Musis Arnhem on June 6. During their second year, these students composed music as part of the Ereprijs “Most Film” project, which they are now bringing to the Andriessen Festival.

They will perform in the final block, from 8:15 PM to 9:15 PM in the Parkzaal, as part of the Ereprijs Xtra programme. The Andriessen Festival is organised annually by Orkest De Ereprijs in collaboration with Phion and Musis Arnhem. The festival keeps the work of composer Louis Andriessen alive through performances of various pieces from his oeuvre. In addition, each edition features brand-new music, including works by our students.
