Alaska’s Unique Proximity to Foreign Capitals

A map reveals that Alaska is closer to three foreign capitals (Tokyo, Ottawa, and Reykjavik) than to Washington, DC. This highlights how Alaska’s geography leads to some surprising distances on the map.

Results of Iceland's EU Referendum Mapped

A map visualises Iceland’s recent EU referendum, where 52.8% voted 'No' to starting EU membership talks. While the Reykjavik region leaned slightly 'Yes' (51.8%), the rest of the country was more opposed (61.3% 'No').

Main reasons cited include concern for local control over fisheries, given the importance of fishing to Iceland’s economy. Despite not being an EU member, Iceland already participates in the EEA and Schengen, following many EU rules but lacking direct decision-making power.

Global Map of GTA Series Popularity

This map illustrates which Grand Theft Auto game is most popular across the world, based on Google search interest since 2004. GTA V dominates much of the globe, yet GTA: San Andreas leads in parts of Latin America, Africa, Eastern Europe, and Asia, thanks in part to older hardware common in these regions. GTA: Vice City stands out in a few countries, like China, where newer titles never launched officially.

What happens when 100 people use QGIS? 🗺️

It often starts with one GIS specialist using QGIS. Then another colleague starts using it. And before you know it, QGIS has become an important tool across multiple teams.

But there is a big difference between installing QGIS on your own computer and managing it for an entire organisation.

With dozens or even hundreds of users, new questions start to appear:

→ Which QGIS version should everyone use?
→ How do you make sure everyone has the right plugins?
→ Can users share the same settings and configurations?
→ How do you manage connections to databases and other data sources?
→ And what happens when an update suddenly breaks an important workflow?

This is where QGIS application management becomes important.

By centrally managing installations, user profiles, plugins, configurations and updates, organisations can create a consistent QGIS environment instead of maintaining dozens of individual setups.

The result? Less troubleshooting, more control and a QGIS environment that can grow with the organisation.

In our QGIS Application Management course, you learn how to professionally deploy, configure, secure and maintain QGIS within an organisation.

🌳 Can AI show us where nature is disappearing?

A forest rarely disappears overnight.

A few trees are removed. A new road appears. Agricultural land expands. And slowly, the landscape starts to change.

From the ground, these changes can be difficult to see at scale. From space, we have another perspective.

Satellite imagery allows us to observe the same place again and again. With AI and remote sensing classification, we can turn those images into geographic data and distinguish between forests, agricultural land, water, urban areas and other types of land cover.

Compare these classifications over time, and change becomes measurable.

→ Where is forest being lost?
→ Where are cities expanding into natural areas?
→ How is agricultural land changing?
→ Where are ecosystems under increasing pressure?

Instead of manually analysing thousands of satellite images, AI can help identify patterns across entire regions.

In our Deep Learning in QGIS course, you learn how techniques such as remote sensing classification and deep learning can be applied to geospatial imagery.

China National Highway G315 Through the Qinghai Desert

Stretching across the remote landscapes of western China, the G315 is known for its dramatic sections through Qinghai’s desert and Gobi terrain.

The repeated white markings across the road are commonly identified as vibration markings or rumble strips, intended to alert drivers and reduce fatigue on long, isolated stretches.

The scenery has made parts of the G315 a popular photography spot.

Kola Superdeep Borehole Depth Visualized

At 12.262 km, the Kola Superdeep Borehole in Russia remains the deepest artificial point ever reached vertically. Yet compared with Earth’s average radius of 6,371 km, humans have drilled only about 0.19% of the way toward the centre.

A few facts put that depth into perspective:
🔸 12.262 km is roughly equivalent to stacking 37 Eiffel Towers vertically.
🔸 The main boreholes were only about 23 cm in diameter.
🔸 Drilling penetrated roughly one-third of the local continental crust.
🔸 Temperatures reached around 180°C at depth, far higher than expected and making further drilling increasingly difficult.
🔸 Research elsewhere has shown that microbial ecosystems can survive kilometres beneath Earth’s surface, revealing a surprisingly extensive deep biosphere.

Projects like Kola show just how little of the Earth beneath our feet we have directly explored — and why borehole data remains so important for understanding the subsurface.
